Stephen Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Came across a 2003 Custom Academy that is currently for sale. Has Schallers and appears to be in excellent condition. Don't know much about this model with the exception that it has a floating bridge. When did production start/end? Why aren't they popular? What type of music is best played with them? Any simularity to the Millennuim in tone and versatility? Anything else you woul like to share would be helpful too. Thanks, Stephen
SouthpawGuy Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 I believe I posted a link to that guitar in the Bay Watch area earlier ... http://www.heritageo...-1750-manassas/ Not my guitar, just a heads up to members that may be looking for one. You say it has a floating bridge ? Pics would help identify the model, I presumed it was an Academy Custom. pics of a sold Academy Custom are here: http://www.elderly.c...ms/40U-3514.htm
Stephen Posted August 14, 2011 Author Posted August 14, 2011 Southpaw Guy. You are correct. The Bay Watch guitar and this one are one in the same. The floating bridge statement was incorrect by me. Should have said floating neck pup. I got a grainy photo from seller. It is Chestnut in color, serial number T19005. He claims it is in excellent condition. What is the price range on these? Stephen
SouthpawGuy Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 As for price I really couldn't say, don't see many of these at all. The asking price is high in my opinion, but without pics it's hard to know. If it's in mint condition, and tricked out like the one in the link I posted it may be worth that to the right buyer, especially with block or traps inlays, bound headstock etc. I'd look for more photos from the seller and go from there.
tulk1 Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 The Academy is basically a single cutaway Prospect. Or, the Prospect is a double cut away Academy. It's natural state is semi-hollow, not hollow. Has a floating center block. That is most likely what the "floating" refers to, rather than a floating pickup on this model. Not saying it couldn't have one, just seems unlikely. As far music styles for this guitar ... what kind of styles are there? It should handle just about anything thrown at it.

Unusual curvey shape to it.
SouthpawGuy Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 That's an interesting guitar. Unusual curvey shape to it. As Kenny mentioned it's a single cut Prospect ... or a Prospect is a double cut Academy The Prospect makes a 535 look big
