DetroitBlues Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I personally don't care for quilting. And I have seen quilting on many inexpensive LP and PRS copies, so it must be a process that can be done relatively cheaply. I prefer flamed tops and seeing mineral streaks in a top. Its done on cheaper guitars with vaneers.... None with a much detail as this.
deadoweyn Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I posted this pic a month or so back. One person PM'd me that this guitar is unappealing. I'd like to get feedback on it. Does a quilted VSB look unseemly, good or what? Are you kidding? It looks great! Like roiling flames. Reminds me of a close-up video I once saw of the surface of the Sun. Man, this thing SHINES! Don't let one negative opinion bother you. It's beautiful. (The previous statement was totally unsolicited and neither I, nor any relation is in the owners employ )
tsp17 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 i like it to look at, but might be afraid to play it out.

Does a quilted VSB look unseemly, good or what? What ever. Who cares what someone thinks about your guitar? If you like quilt, its awesome. If you don't like quilted tops, it's not for you. Doesn't mean it doesn't look good. I like it and thats all that matters IMHO.
koula901 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I think it's kind of special looking. I think Fred is right about the lighting. Lighting is everything.
Blunote Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 The photoshopped pic FredZepp posted looks much better. I know it's heresy but I've never been a big fan of VSB but prefer either natural, antique natural, or darker stained finishes like OSB, Chestnut Sunburst, Wineburst, and Almonds. As far as the quilted look goes, I've seen some that were very appealing. But here again I personally prefer a flamed or tiger striped pattern. But it's really all in the eye of the beholder. If that quilted pattern get's you juiced, then you need to make it yours.
MartyGrass Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 What ever. Who cares what someone thinks about your guitar? If you like quilt, its awesome. My interest is more in why some people are revolted by this odd maple top. I have "The Beauty of the Burst" a couple of feet from me. That book shows the classic LPs with great detail in their description. The LP burst is now iconic, but back in the 50s it was unfamiliar and required marketing and a major endorser to sell them. Still, they didn't sell well. 60 years later we are very comfortable with a flamed burst in the LP shape. But a quilted top on a LP is unsettling to some. That's what intrigues me. PRS started with quilts and flames, so no one would flinch if they saw a PRS with the top I posted. That is normal and expected. But not on a Heritage H150 or a Fender. A highly figured but flameless top on a Millie doesn't seem to provoke any discord. On a LP it would catch your attention more I'll bet. So this really is intriguing to me because of the social psychology, much like how the Barbie doll became an icon. Here's a tri-burst Strat. No ruffled feathers about this. It's gorgeous. Put a quilted VSB top on the Strat and it wouldn't be as universally appealing. I like the quilted VSB H150. I don't know how it plays or sounds. And lord knows I don't need another H150. But it calls like a siren.
MartyGrass Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 For those of you interested in this, it is up for auction. I suppose it would best be placed in the "eBay" section. http://entertainment.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=7048&lotNo=54233

fullonshred Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I'm a fan of quilt, flame, mineral streaks, heck, even plain wood. Just as long as it's not painted, or covered up by an ugly piece of plastic, then I think most wood looks beautiful. I agree whole heartedly. I love all beautiful wood. Add splated and birdseye to the mix for me. And yes MG, I do like that guitar with the figuring and grain it shows. It is a unique piece.
TalismanRich Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 If someone handed it to me and said "play it", I sure wouldn't hand it back and say no! I think it looks fine, different from a normal 150, but so what. Custom is good!
fullonshred Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Interesting... they could just be using a super thin veneer, or that foto-flame fake stuff. Quilted Maple is not come by often, and usually comes with a steep price. I have seen some very pretty tops on Agile Guitars. They use either a solid mahogany body (2 or 3 piece) or same mahogany body with 3/4" solid Canadian maple cap topped by a 1/16th inch veneer of flamed, quilted, spalted or birdseye maple. They also offer a very wide range of finishes. I am fully aware that these guitars are not the equals of Heritage or Gibson guitars. I am also aware they are far less expensive and therefore widely available to many more people. A brand like that makes it possible for someone who can't, or won't spend $1000-$5000 for an heirloom quality guitar to own and play a very lovely, serviceable instrument. In no way does that diminish my love of any figured wood. MG, I would be proud to own that guitar you posted. I love the way the "grain" is still visible underneath the quilt. Just for fun I am posting a picture of an Agile 7 String Guitar I am considering. I have wanted a Purple Quilted or Flamed Top 7 string for a while now, and finally found one.
mars_hall Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Go for it and keep it and change the rings to black for sufficient contrast. I think that is the problem when viewing the pic. Too much bright white in the center.
MartyGrass Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 I'm going to pass. I have enough. Tomorrow night we'll know what it sold for.
Kuz Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I, for one, find it HIDEOUS!!!!!! Now... DIBS. DIBS, DIBS, DIBS. DIBS, DIBS, DIBS. DIBS, DIBS, DIBS. DIBS, DIBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
barrymclark Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 There's always gonna be somebody that doesn't like it. That's true no matter what guitar it is. I remember when I first mentioned my 575. As much as I think it is the most beautiful guitar I have ever seen, plenty on here made it known their gag reflex had been triggered. So... there you have it. haha.

MartyGrass Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 It is available for phone bids until tonight. The current bid is $950. The auctioneers get about 20%, so you have to add that. Shipping is very reasonable. If anyone is interested, check their website. I haven't bought anything from Heritage Auctions. I have seen some great deals though.
tbonesullivan Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I think it looks awesome. I have noticed that Heritage's VSB color seems to have changed somewhat over the years. on my Millie it's pretty much a straight up lemonburst. With some other years I've seen it have more of a faded look with almost a pinkish hue to some parts. And now, the VSB guitars I saw in production during PSP IV looked a bit more orange/dark than I am used to.

Millennium Maestro Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 It sold for 1553.50... I have never seen a live auction and was curious. I like to touch guitars I buy especially at a premium. Does that mean someone paid $300 extra because of bid premiums of 20%?
MartyGrass Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 It was $1553 plus shipping. By contrast a H157 just sold for less than $836. http://entertainment...048&lotNo=54232
