MRDeluxe Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 ... wonder if I should leave the guitar as stock as possible, or switch things up to the way I prefer? First off, taking the pick guard off of this guitar, for me, made it so much easier to play. I'm very new to this style guitar, usually playing F styles, or a LP every now and then. The floating pick guard seemed to limit my right hand a bit and almost made me play the guitar with a softer touch because of it. Not that that's a bad thing, but I like to decide how hard I want to play myself. Loving the look... the top of this guitar is so nice, I couldn't keep it hidden any longer! Phew, I don't know where all of this pick guard prejudice came from this morning, who knows maybe it's just me Well here she is... feels a bit like I'm showing a picture of my girlfriend with her top off. I don't know why
tulk1 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 You can't post pictures of naked ............ oh, wait .... it's your guitar. Nevermind! Hmmm, don't know. It looks okay, but at the same time it looks odd. Probably just because I'm used to seeing them. Ren calles them "finger rests", so if you don't need to rest your fingers, don't need it. Then again, not so sure the fall away on the carve is enough to prevent surface scratches. Another purpose for the ... finger rest.
DetroitBlues Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 I always take off the pickguard on ES (if I ever had one!) and LP style guitars. I find I do not scratch the top of those guitars without the pickguards. On my strat, there is a lot of wear, but not as much as the 140 I have.
MRDeluxe Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 You know I've been gripping my pick a bit more sideways these days and haven't noticed hitting the guitar much. You're right though, if I start feeling my pick bouncing off of the top it may find it's way back on there pretty fast!

I rest my fingers on the guitar most of the time anyway, helps me control my attack and also keeps my hand in place so I don't pluck the wrong string.

kbp810 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Hey, put some clothes on that guitar would ya! If you like it with the PG off, leave it off... later on if you start noticing her getting all scratched up (the guitar, not your girlfriend) you can always put the PG back on I like the look of the PG on my 575 and Blue H150, mainly because they came with them on so I'm used to seeing them with it on; on that same note, I wouldn't dream of putting one on my 157

tbonesullivan Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 how would a pickguard obstruct your hands? Unless you are playing it like an acoustic that is. I usually don't even notice it is there, but I like them there for when I let someone with sloppy picking near the guitar.

But your 150 needs a creme pickguard anyway. The black doesn't do it any justice.
