Guild x 500 Palladin--came across it b/c I CAN'T SHAKE THIS BUG TO HAVE a P90 HOLLOWBODY! For those of you who have been putting up with or torturing me abt this (thx for the Gregor Hilden 525 clip that's haunts me)...I have been checking out some vintage Guilds as a fill in until I scrape/trade up to the 525---Then this came up--it's about as close to the sound I'm looking for as I can imagine---Thing is, this has shifted me to consider a deeper rim than the 525 has. (more feedback though?)...I REM tht I think Marty has a 575 w/ P90s....MARTY (if I rem correctly)--what's your opinion on the p90 575--& would love thoughts on what Heritage P90 custom would end up w/ similar sound to the Guild in the clip!

Custom 550--ebony fret board...dual P90s?...575 of same ilk---525???...OR, maybe I just need to count my blessings and learn to play what I have---but YOU GUYS don't make it easy on a fella (It's cruel to have to look at the forum git picks EVERY TIME I post)!!!!...Jealousy is just an ugly thing......AS ALWAYS----thx for the help.

Hunh! I have a 576 with Phat Cats which does what this Guild seems to be attempting, but my Heritage has tone in spades over this...pretender. Of course, it is a video, which may or may not represent much of anything, although the "Fi" on this demo seems pretty objectively representative. The 576 has a 2 3/4" depth, and a floating block...and maybe (I kind of hate to admit this, as I don't play it out enough) pound for pound the best tone of any of my Heritage, except for my 535. YMMV....

I have your lesser dressed cousin...a 574---BUT I have schallers and a block as well. I get AWESOME jazz tones, but not the 50's bright twang of the p90s. I love the 574 sound--but want to get tht throwback tone--Early John Lee Hooker kind of thing. Do you think the Phat Cats might be the way to go--and in a true hollowbody?...AND +1 on the Pretender part....some nice tones---but still not a Heritage, and never will be!

The 575 with P90s had a wonderful tone. I sold it and got a Super Eagle with the same set up. Both have a rich clean tone with adequate warmth. The hum was minimal.

I remember these both being beautiful guitars...so glad to hear that the tone and warmth were there w/o the hum. is the Eagle a full size or a thin? BTW did you ever part with the 550 thin?

Good info Rob ! A 576 with P-Rails sounds like the way to go, P-90 and humbucker tones a plenty.

I recently had the pleasure of playing a late 60's Gibson ES330 with P-90's. While plugged into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with the gain set to a good crunch, I noticed the guitar wants to feedback almost immediately. The guitar felt great, sounded really good with the grow, but the single coil hum with the feedback was a real turn off for me. Not that I wouldn't of kept the guitar if given to me, but I'd rather have a semi hollow instead of full when using single coils.

The H550 is gone but was at the PSP recently.

The Super Eagle is larger than "full size" in that it has a 3 1/4" body like a Super 400.

As a kid growing up in Kalamazoo, Gibsons were everywhere. I went from a Firebird, which was very heavy, to a 330. At 14, I saved, saved and saved so I could afford something better. Then I sold the 330 and got a 345. No hum, no feedback, and no dots. I was in heaven.

P90s sound good to me now.

345 is a sweet guitar. If there was a something between the 330 and 335, i.e. semi hollow with P90's, I'd be all over it. The Heritage 535 is on my radar either next year or the year after. A new acoustic is on the horizon for me at the moment.

I wonder if a 525 / P90s with a centre block is possible ? It should be as a 525 is thinner than a 575 / 576.

That would be sweet !

That is EXACTLY what I was just thinking---I feel a little "wimpy" wanting to center block to control the feedback for me...but in truth, I'm so used to that style of guitar that this makes a lot of sense and would prob be a better fit--at least for me. Could also do the P-Rails in my 574---but I hate to mess w/ it b/c according to the guys at H, it's one of only only 20 made. just makes me nervous--and I like it like it is. Maybe a Factory Custom 525: P-Rail--centerblock--ebony fretboard--block inlay--possibly solid spruce top for resonance???? BTW the rim depth is confusing on the Heritage website. IS it 1 5/8 or 2 1/4?...If 2 1/4, I don't think i'd go w/ the spruce top.

I think that a lot of tone in that clip is from some room acoustics affecting the mic-ing as well as the amp used and where the player was sitting was unfortunate... I think there is some potential for a good ton-ey time to be had with that guitar. I'd not be caught dead recdording a guitar with a typical single coil setup while sitting on an amp, that kind of hum drives me nuts.

But at the same time, having a bone stock 576, I have to back up Yoslate in how nice a 576 sounds. in a word...amazing.

I'm guessing the Heritage site is wrong, a typo perhaps ?

The 525 is a thinner version of the 575 so if a 575 is 2 3/4" the 525 must be 1 5/8".

The 525 is 2.25".

That being the case, any opinion on a solid Maple/Spruce top?---What in the heck is this thing gonna cost me?--May have to think abt putting the triple nickle up for grabs to do this.

I've had one thinline spruce top. It was very bright and clear, not a good fit for most styles but excellent for jazz.

Some of the Millies have solid maple tops and backs.

Solid top hollow bodies are prone to feedback.

Elderly Instruments has a beautiful thinline Eagle for sale. It's mahogany, so it should be warm and rich. And it has two mounted HBs.

Hfan7~ Another option for you to consider is a used 550. Drop either a set of Phat Cats in it or PRails and you are 99% where I think you want to be tonally.

Used 525's are rare, but used 550's seem to be on Ebay all the time.

550/525 have been my top options--all the info here has moved me along in the process. I had a chance and called Kalamazoo this morn and talked to Ren. Man, he's a great guy!...Bottom line: He really liked the 1/2 center block 525, P-Rail, ebony board, block inlay 525 idea. However, the solid top is not possible b/c apparently a solid top will causes the wood to split at the joint on the top rim. He seemed excited abt the idea--No idea abt cost. Suggestions appreciated abt retailer to go through--Wolfe?...Herb David guitar?...Others? Basically, if not affordable, I'm prob going used 550 (will modify) as that is just a BEAUTIFUL git!!!!

The basic 525 is in the $2,495-$2,600 area. The price goes up as you add custom options (center block, inlays, etc).

When ready to make the order I'd recommend checking with the Heritage dealer you feel will give you the best service.

OTOH~ A used 550 will run you between $1,800 - $2,200 +/-. Add PRails or Phats, and you are easily at between $1,950 - $2,300.

Good hunting!

By half centre block do you mean a floating centre block ? i.e. one not attached to the back of the guitar ?

Good to know that such a 525 is possible. One of those in lefty with some noise free P90s would be the cats meow.

Yes--Ren called it a floating block and he called it a "half" block (I think). The way he described it was that the block would not be attached to the back of the guitar to allow for resonance but would be attached to the top of the guitar to help w/ feedback. Gitfiddler---thx so very much for the pricing--that's abt what I've seen on the bay & Gbase for a 550. I'll prob give wolfe a call to start and see if they can quote me--then I'll shop it. Obviousl no rush--except for my impatience... and funds!------+1 on the cats meow---I'd say it will be the last guitar that I ever buy but..... HOC is always so great---thx to all. ----WOW, just before finishing this, we had a small earthquake!
