Bulldog Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Swart AST Fender Twin, '65 reissue Roland AC-60
DetroitBlues Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 My stuff is listed below (seems a way to connect with people who might have questions about specific gear ..but, obviously, I have more stuff than I'll ever really need.) I went on an amp/speaker jag the last year or so; I hadn't done much speaker swapping, but the combination of a rebuild on my DRRI and installing a Weber made such an enormous difference in the amp that it started me thinking about how a little tweaking might wake things up. My latest project is a compliment for the DRRI/Weber: after consulting the amp tech I've found and gotten his assurance he doesn't think they are crap, I picked up a Marshall JTM30 (I once had one, but sold it when it had problems) and a factory reconed JBL D120F (Big 'ole alnico mag --the speaker Duane supposedly usually used in his cabs.) The tech suggested a fan and a better output transformer for the Marshall, so, I'm looking forward to having a chance to get the stuff to him and let him work his magic. (an all-day round trip almost the length of Lake Ontario ... I envy you guys with good techs and luthiers in the neigborhood.) I'm hoping for a two amp, Fender/Marshall rig using the reworked DRRI and JTM. Those are the two sounds I grew up with --clean Fender, cranked Marshall, so, I'm after that combo in two amps that I can bring in from the truck with one in each hand in one trip. That sounds like a Joe Bonamassa setup. Very cool.
DetroitBlues Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Now that's livin' No doubt! If only we could all be that lucky.
tbonesullivan Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Succinct Eloquence! What can I say? I don't believe in pedals. If I'm looking for the warmth of a Bassman, I go get the amp That 15 watter may be the best sounding amp I've ever played on. The lead channel was just awesome. Also definitely the heaviest 15 watt amp EVER. I think it weighs more than my TSL122. built like a TANK. I may have to hunt one down someday, though I would wager there are very few on the market, if any at all.
yoslate Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Nothing terribly exotic or powerful, but these all have their applications, and I gig all of them, regularly: - blackface Princeton Reverb reissue (re-tubed, with an Eminence Ragin' Cajun), and a custom built 1x12 extension cab (Eminence Screamin' Eagle) - handwired Weber 5E3 tweed Deluxe ( '53 Magnavox P232, Raytheons and Mullards), which also goes through the ext. cab - Bitar "Felix" custom-built 22 watt EL34 1x12 combo (Celestion Gold) Vince played it at PSP III - Bitar "The Note" custom-built 35 watt x2 channel EL34 head, with 2x12 cab (Eminence Wizard and Red Fang) Had this one at PSPIV
JackBaruth Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 I'm not a huge amp collector. * Mesa Mk V Combo in Bubinga * Mesa Maverick 2x12 in Maple * Tone Americana "Evil Robot" * '66 GA-5T Skylark * KBP810 RR30 on a Crate Blue Voodoo 4x12 V30s * Roland VGA-3 * Roland VGA-5 * Roland VGA-7 * Vox AC4TV Mini * Harris IRT 5-watter lunchbox w/12" cab * Harris IRT 15-watter lunchbox * Roland Mini Stack I think that's it.

Trouble Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Currently: Carvin Vintage 16 Carvin MTS3212 combo Carvin X-100B fuzzy half stack Carvin X-100B reissue head + 2x12 avatar cabinet with texas heat speakers Mesa Boogie DC-5 Marshall TSL122 The TSL122 needs some work. Something is wrong with the clean channel where it picks up a lot of oscillations and it's got more background noise than the LEAD channels. Also it seems to have no top end. How do you like the Carvin Vintage 16? My Current amps are- 1 Blackface Super Reverb 2 silverface Vibro Champ 3 peavey Valveking 1x12 (gig amp) 4 RMS solid state 65 watt 1x12 combo I gave $85 for new lol, was my practice amp before I fixed my Vibro Champ I would really like a deluxe and at least one british flavored amp.
schundog Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 I stand in awe at some of these collections.... I knew I should have gone to Med School.......
DetroitBlues Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 3 peavey Valveking 1x12 (gig amp) I loved my Valveking. But it took me three tries to get one that worked. Tone was amazing in the amp and it was a small amp for 50watts. Great for gigging with! I miss the amp, but I wouldn't have a KPB810 without it.
Trouble Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I stand in awe at some of these collections.... I knew I should have gone to Med School....... Me too! I've had my Super Reverb for a really long time and it's a great amp, I guess having a great amp I focused more on buying guitars for toys, but I am lacking in the Marshall/Vox sound.

Great for gigging with! I miss the amp, but I wouldn't have a KPB810 without it. The only problem I've ever had with mine was the jack on the foot pedal, originally it was a cheap right angle plug and shorted out, I changed to a quality straight jack and no problems since, but I rarely use the footswitch. I only use it if I don't carry my pedalboard. It is a pretty good amp for the price.
bolero Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I stand in awe at some of these collections.... I knew I should have gone to Med School....... well, for me it's taken years to accumulate those...most of them were found as great deals & bought before vintage amps were all the craze besides, no one even knows what a Garnet amp is lol, they are undervalued...as are old Traynors. my YBA-1 sounds as good as my Hiwatt, and the Hiwatt sounds stellar
TalismanRich Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Back in the mid 70's our bass player had a YBA3, and the other guitarist had a YBA-1a. They were LOUD! Look in the background of this picture from 75.
bolero Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 oh yeah, you can just see it back there!! that's a great pic, what kind of stuff were you playing back then? a YBA3 sounds glorious with a guitar, but yes, it's incredibly loud....very good Jimi tones with a strat.....they work great as a bass amp, tone for days; I sold my vintage SVT & kept the YBA3, couldn't justify the weight & also someone offered me a lt of $$ for the Ampeg. haven't missed it YBA-1's were crazy loud as well, I think they got 80w out of 2xEL34? YBA1's are still freaking loud but more manageable....mine has EL34's in it, which I think gives it the Hiwatt flavour, instead of 6L6 which most of them had & sounds "fendery"
TalismanRich Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 This talk about amps got me hankering for the old days. My Guild amp has been sitting for about 3 years without being turned off. After it was in the basement when water backed up, I thought it might be good to have someone go through it and redo the caps. That hasn't happened, but last night I pulled the vintage C12Ns off the shelf, bolted them back into the cabinet, reseated all the tubes, plugged it in and flipped the switch (with fingers crossed). OK, no smoke, no fire, no sparks. Plugged in my guitar, flipped the standby and. TWANGGGG! It still works. One thing about this amp, the sound is so OPEN. I don't know if its the circuit, the Jensen speakers, or the fact that its a big cabinet with lots of air. Here's a shot of my "vintage" combo, some 35 years after the pic above.
