Would it be a 575? A 535? Or a 550 or 576? Jump in Barry!

a telecaster or a Setzer Gretch . . .

or if it must be an H, how about an H 357 - those are single-coil guitars. Or a Millie/Prospect with split coils.

This is easy. H525. You could then throw a Bigsby on there with a nice roller bridge and locking Sperzels. :D

Why do I say the H525? For the basic reason that this is VERY close to the ES295 that Scotty Moore once played. If that ain't rockabilly, nothing is.

If you just gotta, you could then throw a Bigsby on there with a nice roller bridge and locking Sperzels. :D

Definitely a 550 with a Bigsby....... yep it would be a 6120 Gretch killer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That wouldn't be a bad one either. It has some very similar build characteristics as the single cut Gretsch 6120 Nashvilles.

Having really weighed the two, I have settled on getting the 525 as my next full hollow though and it will likely be used for more rockabillyish tunes.

Slammer, you just won't go wrong with either one of these options. The only thing I'd give the 525 is that it is cheaper.

Millennium Ultra Std with HRWs,

Funny thing is, damn near any guitar with any sort of decent acoustic-ish tone and a killer set of vintagy sounding pickups will do the trick. My 575 is a 'billy beast.

Great suggestions.

Sorry, I dont do Bigsbys. I don't want that ugly chunk of metal on ANY guitar that I own!!!

Then you're off to the races with a stock 525 for that Scotty Moore vibe. If you want that Gretschy-vibe, I'd get the 550 and load it with TV Jones Power'trons.

I gotta say that both of these are on my list. The 550 is down the list a bit though from the 525.

went and watched a rockabilly band recently where the guitarist alternated between a strat and a LP studio with what I think were phat cats. He had a Peavey Classic 50 212 and a cheesy looking Korg floor fx processor.

I guess visually it might not have looked right but he made it happen in a big way. The band was awesome and his sound sat in it well. The single coil in the bridge of the strat had good bite and honk.

The band was young enough to have a genuine f'u attitude and good energy and old enough and talented enough to know how to make it work.

The dance floor was packed.

Think the guitar is not as important as the inclination, attitude and ability to sell it.

A 550 or 525 with TV Jones would be pretty awesome though.

You are ABSOLUTELY right. If you don't have it in your hands, then you just just have a rockabilly looking guitar that doesn't sound like one. However, I gathered Will was looking for one that had the look, too. That is why I said the H525 or the 550.

If I were going for look, I'd get either either the H525 in a gold top with a Bigsby or the H550 in trans-orange (of course) with a Bigsby. The Bigsby is TOTALLY for looks. I just don't use them anymore really. I might occassionally, but not enough to bother paying for one.

Barry, I had a 550 and I sold it 9 months ago. I never even perceived it as a rockabilly guitar, to me it was a pure jazzbox. It sounded fantastic however. It is still up on my gallery if you want to view it. I really do like the 525 however. Would love to get my hands on one. Of course I have a 575 so why not use that one for the 'billy! BTW, I think I asked you this before but have you heard the local ATL 'billy band, the Psycho DeVilles? I have both of their CDs and would be happy to burn them and mail to you. Just pm me with an address.

it could be but it may need the right electronics. Gotta remember the old rockabilly guitars were jazz boxes. ;) my 575 is a billy beast.

Absolutely heard of them. Psycho Devilles and Hot Rod Walt Trio are frequently spoken names amongst my friends and me. Walt is a great guitar player. Great car customizer too.

I have a one off rockabilly beast, H-516 trans orange, TV Jones filtertron and powertron PU's, Bigsby. Got her secondhand of fleabay. I need to work on my guitar playing some more to do her justice. She does it with a wow! factor she's so good.

Just my 2 cents...One of the most toneful Heritage gits I've ever played, that can definitely do the rockabilly thing is an H530!!

All one has to do is slap a Bigsby on that P90'd full hollow body and they are in rockabilly heaven.

How does the 530 differ from the 525 (not BMW's here mind you)

It really depends on what strings are on each. Obviously the slightly thicker body of the 525 is going to give a thicker tone than the skinny 530.

I strung my 525 with flatwounds for a wonderful old school jazz tone.

The 530 has 10-52's Pure Nickel and does a blues thing second to none. It can do jazzy stuff too, but I leave that mostly to the 525.

Expanding on your BMW analogy, I'd compare the 530 to a M3...and the H525 to an M5. B)
