koula901 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Hi Folks, Been wanting a stronger/fatter sound than my Fralin P90s are giving me in my H 137. I tried using a boost pedal and that wasn't giving me the sound that I want, though I'm getting great tone out of it. Last Saturday, I brought home a $150.00 Lefty Washburn B4, and I loved the sound of the humbucker in the bridge position. The body wood is Alder, with a curly maple cap (made in Indonesia) and had Hum, Single, Single, - so, it is like a fat strat. I discovered I really like the sound of that hum bridge, but the high E and B strings were sizzling/ice-picky - so I brought it back. Another woman in my band plays the no-longer-manufactured Dan Armstrong Ampeg AMG100 - and I've always liked the sound of that. That's a mahogany slab body, with the Dan Armstrong dual-blade humbucker in the bridge and it sounds great! It gets the SG-ish ACDC high drive sounds (but with better definition),and a strong, jangly rhythm sound - whichis what I'm after. I've concluded I need a humbucker in the bridge. Kent Armstrong called me last night and suggested that I wire my two Lindy Fralin noise-cancelling P90 singles in Series, and he says that'll give me a monster humbucker sound. And if I like it, then, I could install a mini switch or a push-pull pot (pp is my preferred way). Soo... just wanted to share what I'm contemplating. I've never known the difference between parallel and series till now, and have no clue what out-of-phase sounds like, except that I'v read it sounds nasally. Has anyone else wired to singles into series and liked the effect?
DetroitBlues Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 I believe KBP810 had the same questions when he was designing his 157 custom. He'd be the best one to ask. He originally wanted P-90's but switched to Mini's because of the tone.
tulk1 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Gotta love that! Mr. A calling you to tell you how to wire up Mr. Fralin's pups. All you need now is Mr. Lollar to do the soldering for you!
fxdx99 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 That is very cool, Katy, that D.A. would call you directly. Nice! Yeh, this '4-way mod' is what I have on my teles. Your current wiring has 3-way w/bridge, middle (both in parallel), and neck. The 4th position would be both in series. And yes, I like this position a lot. It's a 'louder/boosted' middle position sound so gives a boost to cut thru the mix when needed. I wouldn't say it's like a 'hot bridge', which is kinda what it sounds like you're after... but it's a cool sound. With a tele, there's a 4 way switch that just replaces the 3-way. PP makes sense for yours. Wiring layout and clips on a tele... http://www.diyguitarmods.com/telecaster-4-way-wiring.php
koula901 Posted October 17, 2011 Author Posted October 17, 2011 @Kenny : ) I do my best! @ Randy -- well, after I did this post, I called my guitar techie and he said the same thing you did - he said it won't sound like a humbucker but just a different sound. Not sure I like the sound of that, but I won't be able to get this experiement done until weekend of the 28th. If it doesn't work out, then I'll just have to find a very articulate humbcker for the bridge -- maybe a really hot one to split for a parall sound to combine with the neck....we'll see. So many things to consider!
