Guest HRB853370 Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Is it my imagination, or is the shade of gold that Heritage uses on their Goldtops lighter than what the G company uses?
yoslate Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 I think it is. The guy at Big Orange Guitars, in Florida, who used to post here, but hasn't in a while, had a goldtop P-90 150 for sale a couple of years ago. He had it refin'd in "correct" Gibson gold. It was darker, much more like my old '52. Wanted to pull the trigger n that one, but he was asking a lot for a used 150. Nice one, though!
DetroitBlues Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 The only thing I do not like about some Heritage Gold Tops is there are not just Gold Tops, their GOLD. Front, back, sides, neck.... I don't like that at all. I'd rather have natural back, sides, and neck. Then just have the top gold. Almost had the 140 refinished like that.
yoslate Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I think it is more of a champagne color.. Nice looking piece, that one!
golferwave Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I once had a 1968 Les Paul Goldtop P-90 that I picked up from a guy in a small town in southern Iowa. He was an older gentleman and said he used the guitar touring with a band around the midwest back in the 1970's. The gold finish had been stripped down to the maple top with the back and sides being the walnut dark color. I sent it to Dan Shinn at Lays guitar shop in Akron, Ohio and in talking with him he said he would put the original style finish on it and add some patina to make it look older. He said that there was a small variance in the factory color and talked about how they mixed it and I think he even said something about flakes of brass being in the paint. I guess a preference of the shade of gold is in each persons eye. Myself I like em all. Goldtops are elegant.
dbetts41 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Instead of brass, I think he may have been talking about copper powder as part of the mix...
fxdx99 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 An '83 K'zoo LP. The luster's gone... suppose it kinda falls into the beater thread category just cuz it's been used a bunch, suffered breaks, repairs what not. But dang, it sure sounds good. Blue Sky, indeed.
Guest HRB853370 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I guess it is since you put a sticker on it!
golferwave Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Instead of brass, I think he may have been talking about copper powder as part of the mix... I think that may have been it. It's been 10 years or so ago and I couldn't remember if he said brass or copper so I'm sure you're correct. Anyway it seemed to be a real witches brew of ingrediants.

I've always liked that one Randy. It's a beauty!
DetroitBlues Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 That's not a beater, that's a well played guitar with lots of love taps all over it.
NoNameBand Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I like the Heritage Gold they use in their Gold Tops. I doubt that they would try to match Gibson's color or anyone else's color for that matter.
