JohnCovach Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I had my P90 150 at a rehearsal today. It's the first time I've used it in a high-gain situation with florescent lighting. As ever, the hum was pretty obvious. But then I was delighted to discover that one of the pickups is RWRP, so the middle switch position kills the hum. Very nice. I then started wondering about putting mini-humbuckers in that guitar, since I don't have a mini-humbucker guitar and I have a couple of other P90 ones. I went to the Lollar site and found the following video, which is remarkably informative about both P90s and mini-humbuckers. As a bonus, it looks like the guitar Jason is using to demonstrate is a 150. http://www.lollargui...er-installation
DetroitBlues Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Check with KBP. He had triple mini's in his custom 157
yoslate Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I think golferwave (Scott) is going that route, as we speak, with his black P-90 150.
golferwave Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I think golferwave (Scott) is going that route, as we speak, with his black P-90 150. I have it done and it's a killer. Put Smits mini hums in it. I'll post some pictures as soon as I can.
big bob Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I really like the lollar mini's in my 170. They can be very chimey and clean, but they also get nice and crunchy too.
SouthpawGuy Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Fluorescent lighting is a pain, in Ireland domestic bulbs are now CFLs so I've gone to noiseless as much as possible with Fralin hum free P-90s in the 137. They are excellent pickups and are totally silent even with high gain and fluorescents.

Tallershadows Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I have a H150 with Mini Lollar humbuckers from Wolfe guitars that I purchased from Brent. Overall great guitar. The neck pup is warm, thick, but very tight. Just sounds awesome. I have some problems with the bridge however. It sounds a little shrill and tinty. I had other people play and listen to it, and they all had similar unsolicited opinion. The neck is measuring 6.3k and the bridge 6.9k. I think the bridge was made with alnico V, while the neck has alnico II. Just doesnt work for me. I am having JS Moore wind a custom bridge for me currently. It will be wound hotter with alnico II. Once this issue is resolved, I think minis are a great alternative to the full sized humbuckers.

Tallershadows Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Thanks for the suggestion, Detroitblues. Will look into it.
JohnCovach Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 There are some remarks about tone in the Lollar video I linked. He prefers '57 LP wiring, and cautions that there's a tone cap on the volume control that is often used and can cause a brittle sound.
mars_hall Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I'm purt' damn happy with myself today. I bought the Lollar P90s golferwave (Scott) took out of his 150 last week and put them in my '80 Les Paul Deluxe. I had thought about doing this a long time ago, but never got around to it. So when I heard he was swapping his out, I figured it was time to move on the possibility he might sell them. I'm liking what I'm hearing and have always liked this guitar. It is one those that you can feel the magic resonant crispness in the wood, more so than maybe any guitar I own.
golferwave Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Excellent! Very nice figure in the top on the deluxe!

Almost makes me wish I hadn't routed my '73, which came with mini-hums. Had a very talented luthier, David Sheppard, turn my Deluxe into a pretty credible '60. Know what you mean about "magical , resonant crispness." That's a great looking guitar right there! I'll bet it just kills with P-90's, maybe my favorite pickup....
golferwave Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Here's the black H-150 with mini humbuckers installed. Smits HD-2 (Hot Dark) A2 magnet in the bridge and LB-5 (Light Bright) A5 magnet in the neck. They sound terrific but I think I should have went with the HB-5 (Hot Bright) A5 for the neck as it's a little weak sounding. I'll email Kevin Smith and see if he'll hook me up.
Gitfiddler Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Golferwave~ That black mini bucker 150 is AWESOME!
golferwave Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Golferwave~ That black mini bucker 150 is AWESOME! Thanks! I have three other Heritages with P-90's so I figured I'd take this one and put the mini's in it. Sounds awesome! Just a little weak in the neck pickup. I'll get that fixed.
111518 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 That really is neat ...although I also thought it was killer looking wth p-90s. Another mini-bucker maker to consider is Tom Short, who specializes in them. I'm very pleased with the pickups he made me for my Epi Rivera; even though his site doesn't show traditional mini's with pole pieces, he will make them. ...now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
H Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Golferwave~ That black mini bucker 150 is AWESOME! I have to agree. Black guitars do not normally grab my attention but that is pretty!

golferwave Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 That turned out GREAT Scott! Thanks Brent!
