Guest HRB853370 Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 After seeing GuitarArtMan's lovely 137 on the FS section, what are the advantages/disadvantages of having a only a bridge but no tailpiece? I am sure cost is a factor here, but does this affect sound/playability/setup?
DetroitBlues Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I doubt it. As long as the bridge is adjustable and is very solid (no play in it with no string tension), the bridge should be just fine. The first wrap around tailpieces were not adjustable which is why the tune-o-matic bridge was developed. The adjustable wrap around came by many years later. At least that's my opinion on the matter....
eljay Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 playability is better without a tailpiece, imo.
Guest HRB853370 Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Dont know bout ya'all but I like a little tail-piece when I play!
GuitArtMan Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Some people think wrap-around bridge has more sustain. Personally, I think they feel a little stiffer to me and like the feel of the two piece bridge/tail piece better, but that's just me.
DetroitBlues Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I wrap the strings around my tailpiece, does that count?
tbonesullivan Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 You may get better sound conduction with the wraptail. I've got one on my Kahuna, and on my Hamer Eclipses, and they are nice. Question is whether I'm gonna install a pigtail on the eclipse, as I have a 95% complete one (missing a saddle).
Guest HRB853370 Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Stop tails are badass. Less is more. Stop tails?????
RJLII Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Stoptail is another term for a one piece bridge/tailpiece like on the H-137. "Back in the day" it was a cost saver because it didn't require a seperate tailpiece or studs or the drilling operation associated with them. They were famous for not being able to intonate well on many guitars. Some think they are the cat's ass. I don't care for them much in general, but the Pigtail on my H-137 (below) works well and looks nice.

schundog Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 They look really cool!! Yes, they DO!! I love my 137. It's got the snottiest snarl of any of my guitars, if that makes any sense. Great for what I like to play. http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz327/schundog/heritagedowntown141.jpg[/img]"]http://
yoslate Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Stop tails are badass. Less is more. I think so, too! Haven't seen anyone else with one of these. Intonation is dead on. Pics didn't want to post, so I used links.... Sorry! http://www.flickr.com/photos/23873248@N08/2265451615/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/23873248@N08/2266222410/in/photostream/
Guest HRB853370 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I like the pigtail on RJL's 137 better than the stoptailpiece on a 137. Maybe its because I just dont like the strings wrapped around that tailpiece. My next Heritage is going to be a 137 singlecut. I have made the decision!
DetroitBlues Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 As far as looks go, I rather like this one at Stew-Mac...
