koula901 Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Anybody have any experience with this lunchbox head? They're pretty cheap - rumored to be made in PRC.
barrymclark Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 My experience with H&K is old. About 15 years ago at least. At that time the H&K stuff was top notch. It was all made in Germany at the time.
schundog Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 I had to chuckle at the irony of his "Guitar Player" strap being prominently displayed all through an interview with Premier Guitar!
JeffB Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 H&K have great products. I have a Rototsphere, Tube factor, had a Replex and have a sweet little Puretone 112 combo sitting right infront of me. The little Tubemeister is a pretty cool little amp. I like the head more than the combo. Its quite gainy but not metal gain or voice. More classic rock to hard rock. Reasonable clean at lower levels. Dont know what else to say about it really, I plugged in, played through it, thought it sounded alright turned it off and never thought too much about it again on a personal level. Just not an amp for me. But its not bad, its quite good at what it does.
barrymclark Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Yeah, I can't say what the difference is between the quality of build of the German built amps and the Chinese built ones. Assuming they are reasonably built, this is at least an affordable H&K. I dig the 18w tone. I really like their cleaner sounds. Just sick.

Just not an amp for me......right now
bolero Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I have an old H&K Tubeman footpedal, it's built like a tank and is very versatile......I was using it as a DI for bass a lot too
602a Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I tried one last week and that thing "for the money" is sweet. Lot's of sounds to be found. Kinda like a Mesa sound with high gain.

barrymclark Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 ...and Mesa V-Twin....and those Boss Fender preamp pedals.
Mikenov Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Big Hughes and Kettner fan. I own the Tube 20 and a Puretone Combo . Both are great. I haven't played any of their tube gear I wouldn't like to own. Tubeman is a great DI box. Best I have played. I think you would be happy with it. H&K seems to know tone.
bolero Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 ha, I had an original england guv'nor as well...left it in The Boot Pub in Whistler BC at a jam...oops

barrymclark Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Mikenov, what is a DI box? Direct Box. You can plug right into house or recording board.
bolero Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I finally watched that clip, when he goes thru the monitors is he using a red box, or is the red box circuit built into the amp?
bolero Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 ah, it's built in....great! http://www.hughes-and-kettner.com/products.php5?id=142&prod=TubeMeister%2018%20Head
barrymclark Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Anybody have any experience with this lunchbox head? They're pretty cheap - rumored to be made in PRC. Oh, it isn't a rumor. If it is a concern, it definitley is made in China. If not, well, it is still made in China. haha.
koula901 Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 It's not as much a concern for me as it is for some others who buy equipment. I'd much prefer to buy products made in the USA; that said, I've had hit or miss experiences w/products from China. A joyo pedal gone bad (after I traded it to GC!), and the Joyo clip-on tuner didn't work from the start. But excellent experience with the Epi half stack.
