Hey need some advice again...Met w Dan (Spectrum 13) and Josh loved the Millie as i thought he would. Here is the question...does the fact that back is maple vs mahogany make any difference in the sound. #2 Is there any difference other than the headstock regarding the Millie LE (circa 2000) all maple vs newer Millie Ultra Std. Perhaps I should contact Heritage, but there is a nice Chesnut sunburst on ebay in Michigan available for $1600. Worthwhile?? Or should we wait for one priced more competitively? Is the Millie LE use upgraded woods, pups back in 2000? Any advantage to using mahogany on back vs maple? Stop tail bridge vs wraparound bridge (Millie LE comes with). Again, thanks for the hospitality of Dan, who coincidently lived in Sandy Springs, Atlanta and was gracious enough to let us try and play his guitars!!

I'd say more to do w/sustain than sound, although as a former owner of a H150CM (mahogany) and now owner of two Millies (DC and H155 w/maple) they both have great sustain and are lighter as maple is less dense than mahogany.

you can't go wrong, truthfully, and you'll prob end up owning one of each, it just happens lol

I just played a Millie in Chestnut Sunburst w/ HRW's. I must say that is one of the nicest guitars I've ever picked up. Absolutely stunning. I would think $1600 is a great price for it.

New Heritage Millie Ultra Std is $2,155 per Jay Wolfe quote just received.

My opinion might get disqualified since I just sold my Millie to Slammer, but that is a great price for a new Millie Ultra Std.

If you compare the unique features, quality build and available custom options, there is nothing on the guitar market that comes close...and made in the USA!

You can't even get an entry level, off the rack LP Standard for that price!!

Actually quoted price for Mille DC as $2155...unbelievably the Millie Ultra Std is $2555...now we are getting into Gibson 359 and CP Thornton territory without the resale!! I don't know about 2.6K for a new guitar. Hmmm....

RESALE?! We don't need no stinkin' resale!! :icon_pirat:

That word creates the greatest conundrum for potential buyers of any NEW Heritage. However, once you get passed that, and focus on what you are getting up front (a hand made, custom, one-of-a-kind, USA guitar built to your specs), it makes the decision a little easier to swallow. Now if you are the type that tends to sell or trade off guitars after a relatively short period of time, then yes, buying almost any new Heritage (or most any new guitar) is not a good idea. That is precisely why buying a USED Heritage makes the most economical sense for many players and collectors of the marque.

Gibsons might always have a stronger resale than most Heritages. But as time goes by, and folks begin to realize what they have in a Heritage guitar, maybe that will change. Players are awakening to what Heritage guitars have going for them. Collectors have not yet caught on.

Guitars from almost any maker are not a good financial investment. They all drop like a stone as soon as they are sold. Good investment...Stick to gold, platinum and stocks recommended by politicians on select banking and finance commitees. :icon_king:

I love my Gibsons as well as Heritage guitars. I especially love my Gibsons when I go to sell one of them...to fund another Heritage.

Good hunting.

mahogany can sound warmer than maple. maple can sound "faster" than mahogany (note definition, attack), brighter, IME

#2 Is there any difference other than the headstock regarding the Millie LE (circa 2000) all maple vs newer Millie Ultra Std.

there are diffs amongst the Millennium models in construction, but i forget what they are, so a call to K'zoo or a knowledgeable dealer might help. i had '00 LE #028, sold during 1st layoff, doggone it. wudda neat guitar...

sounds like a good price to me, all things considered. but i would like to play something before buying or have an option to return, i.e. something like a 48hr trial period such as Wolfe or others offer

Is the Millie LE use upgraded woods, pups back in 2000?

there were pickup options, i chose Seth Lovers. this was pre-HRW

Any advantage to using mahogany on back vs maple?

no advantage, just a difference in sound

Stop tail bridge vs wraparound bridge (Millie LE comes with).

matter of opinion. for semi-hollow i usually prefer finer controls over intonation...but a good wrap bridge (e.g., Pigtail) can increase sustain & include intonation controls

The Mille LE shouldn't have a wraparound unless its been modified. They will have the Schaller bridge and tailpiece that was standard at the time. The new Ultra will have the current TonePros setups most likely.

$1600 isn't a bad priced for the LE. I've seen them go for less, but not much. Likewise for the standard Mille. $13-1500 will be the normal range is very good shape.

I don't know that I would be able to tell a major difference between the mahogany and the maple unless everything else is the same. Maple is supposed to have more snap and brightness. By the time you change pickups, strings and setup and go through an amp, a lot of that can be masked. I find it easier to hear the differences on an acoustic where the wood is the primary sound generator.

As for resale, thats not a factor for me. I haven't sold a guitar since the mid 70s. When I find a guitar that I like, I buy it. Some people buy and sell guitars constantly. They pick and choose what to keep and pass the rest on to someone who might appreciate it. I would have a hard time doing that. Maybe that's why I'm not in sales!

As for a Gibson 339, I haven't played one that grabbed me. About a year ago, I picked up 3 or 4 335s at Willcutt in Lexington. 1 sounded great... nice body, full rounded. The others seemed to be lifeless. The difference? The good one was about 30 or more years old. The new ones were flat in comparison.

Have Josh play a few and see how they compare. Let his ear be the guide.

When he finds "the one" he'll know.

Curious... Did you buy the Mille?

- I had paid $1800 for mine (used) a few years ago (#03).

- Absolutely no regrets.

- Added the KaZoo-made Bigsby B5.

Also like the current production Heritage Millennium Ultra STD series but don't need a second one.

- No plans to sell it.

- The grandkids can fight about it when I'm gone.

I'd say $1600 is a great used price and would be surprised to see any listed lower than that

$2100 is a killer price on a new handmade gtr as well....I'd be inclined to just go new & get exactly what you want
