robmc Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Hello All This is definitely a 2A or equivalent quilted Big leaf maple top. Back is almost definitely genuine mahogany, although I think it's flatsawn and is mostly the quarter with some heart. Koa and genuine mahogany are very different woods. Koa is pretty much exclusive to the Hawaiian Islands and the Mahogany is from central or south America. Figured Koa is a much rarer and very valuable wood then mahogany , although good mahogany is getting tough to find Rob www.marksmanwood.com
Gitfiddler Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 To me it looks like a very nice two piece, nicely figured, Quilt Maple top with an equally nice quarter sawn Korina back and multi-lam Korina neck. Those are Class of 59 features as the Maestro has opined. Why not ask the seller to pop open the control cavity or provide any documenation to solve the mystery?
Kuz Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Personally, I think the seller is pretty close price wise. Upgraded maple quilt top, korina body, you just don't see those everyday. IF it is in near mint condition then he is close price wise in my opinion. If your were to spec that out as a new custom order you are looking at around $2300 plus.
GuitArtMan Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Interesting guitar, but KOA is just another type of mahogany..... Its certainly not a standard 150, but I don't its worth the price... Not the same tree at all.
Millennium Maestro Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 I am in negotiations, seller states it a consignment and a 9 out of 10 conditionwise.
SouthpawGuy Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I am in negotiations, seller states it a consignment and a 9 out of 10 conditionwise. Just sent you a pm.
tulk1 Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Thought CrazyDog was looking at buying this guitar. Did he back out?
Millennium Maestro Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Thought CrazyDog was looking at buying this guitar. Did he back out? Yes, he gave me the go ahead!
JackBaruth Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I almost bought this when I was staying at the Travaasa last month. The price seemed high, honestly, and when I looked at the guitar in person it looked a little tired. I wouldn't criticize anyone who pulled the trigger, though!
DetroitBlues Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I think what Detroit meant is that Koa and Mahogony sound similiar. I'm also of the opinion that guitar is definately not koa, and is overpriced. That is what I meant....I thought I read they were of the same species, but I realized it was being similiar tone woods...
jazzrat Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Gorgeous guitar. I'd wonder what the pickups are. Looks like the Schallers have been swapped out.
mark555 Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 well, what ever it is, it looks really nice.
bolero Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 that thing looks awesome....I agree on the korina, original guy must have got koa/korina mixed up a sexy beast for sure!!
SouthpawGuy Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I am in negotiations, seller states it a consignment and a 9 out of 10 conditionwise. So, any developments ?
Millennium Maestro Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Its a consignment for a doctor. It has mystery replacement pickups, one has a non identifiable sticker the other the word NECK scratched on the non identifiable back plate - Non original case, gereric pups.... Another HOCer description of WORN. Stubborn non motivated seller. A fact Pups will need changing. All add up to a no deal at this price!
KzooWolverine92 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 That Guitar is definitely NOT Koa. I worked at Gibson for 2 yrs. in Nashville (I learned a lot, but A HORRIBLE COMPANY to work for!) And I worked with woods all the time 12 hrs a day along with finishes, etc. We made a Koa les paul - very limited. That is simply Quilted Maple on a Mahogany body. Mahogany can sometimes look like limba, it isn't always the darker mahogany that is on some guitars, there are certainly different shades of mahogany. But that is certainly mahogany. But Koa is absolutely gorgeous. I have a Takamine acoustic with Flame Koa sides and back. The golden brown color is the prettiest looking wood grain on a guitar I think. I'm from Michigan originally, and I may have a Koa top H-157 custom made. Heritage is awesome in that they will actually answer the phone and work with you in building what YOU WANT! (Forget Gibson, they charge $750 per each custom option you want, no matter how small - different nut-$750! And that's the EMPLOYEE rate. Working at Gibson was one of the WORST experiences in my life, read their online employee reviews on Glassdoor.com, they are 89%NEGATIVE! Do yourself a favor and stick with Heritage, a great company that still gets it right.) Thicker neck, belly cut / contour, etc. I'll probably buy the Koa wood itself online though, because Heritage definitely wouldn't carry it. Koa is ONLY grown in Hawaii. And it has to be over a certain elevation for it to grow to. So it is only in certain areas of the Hawaiin Islands that it grows. It is pretty protected, but it is not endangered. But it is definitely harder to get than most other woods.

Kuz Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 You guys realize this thread is over 2 yrs old, right???
HANGAR18 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 You guys realize this thread is over 2 yrs old, right??? Why is it any less true?
NoSnowBlower Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I insist on it being a Class of 59 model with white korina body. TRUST ME! +1
