Guest HRB853370 Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Anybody experienced checking on older Heritages? Just curious. I have a 97 G brand Gem Studio and the lacquer is checking near the pups and the straplocks. Looks rather classy.
yoslate Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I have a '90 576. It's checking subtly, all over. It's a natural finish, but it has really darkened with age...binding too. I think it's gorgeous!
MartyGrass Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Do they check? Check! Lacquer checking is a sign of character, just like binding yellowing. Don't fight it.

the jayce Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Checking of the finish and yellowing binding looks awsome! Except when it comes time to sell unfortunately. People always want pristine when thier shelling out thier green backs. But i think an aged guitar is the ultimate look when it comes down to guitar coolness.
Genericmusic Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 All finishes check eventually. Some more readily than others depending on on care and type of use. Environmental factors play an important part too.
yoslate Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 As a fellow H 576 owner, I would love to see a picture of your gorgeous 576. GASguy, I've had trouble posting from flik'r, but I'll try. Hope this one works. And how are you digging your 576? I think they're one of Heritages great secrets. Mine, with Phat Cats, is just a box of tone! thttp://www.flickr.com/photos/23873248@N08/2265461353/in/photostream
Guest HRB853370 Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Yoslate, tried to link to that Flickr but it told me it was "private". So is the 576 similar to a 575, or a 550?

Mine, with Phat Cats, is just a box of tone! thttp://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream I'm loving my 576, (thanks John), it has such a HUGE and OPEN tone to it. I'm considering a pick up swap down the road, and currently thinking about some TV Jones pickups for a pickup flavor that is different from my other Heritage guitars; but I like what is in the 576 currently pretty well, a SD jazz in the neck and a SD Seth Lover in the bridge, so I'm just thinking about it right now.
mark555 Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 To me, one of the nicest examples of checking can be found on an ageing Gold Top. particularly when it is gaining that slightly green look to it - it just looks the business.

Yeah, you can't get into Yoslate's "private stash"! The finish doesn't have to check, my Guild has a nitro finish and until it ended up floating in the basement water, it had very little if any checking after a mere 35 years. Even with that, it only has a few cracks. Part of it has to do with temperature changes, humidity and the of course, the lacquer formulation. Temperature extremes are really hard on nitro lacquer.
DetroitBlues Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 My '85 140 has no checking but my '90 445 is checking. I think it depends on the conditions the guitar was kept. My 140 has it bumps and brusies, but the 445 is a well worn and traveled guitar...

Gitfiddler Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 The finish on my '93 Golden Eagle has not started to check. Maybe it is defective.
H Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Sorry about that. My wife just showed my how to open it to everyone...done! Hey Rob, loved the 'numpty' t-shirt How about some pics of The Grail?
yoslate Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 CZECH. Overheard in the Olympic village: "...Pole vaulter?" "No, Czech, but how dit chew know my name vas Valter?" Howard, my best friend, who's Scots, had his sister visit a couple of years ago. I guess he filled her in. She brought that with t-shirt her, as a gift to me. I wear it proudly. He wears one which says: "Yur nippin' meh heid!" And sorry, but I have no pics of "The Grail," yet.

High Flying Bird Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 CZECH. On my way home from PSP4 last year I sat next to a pretty 22 year old Czech girl on the Detroit to Huntsville leg of the journey. I told her if she got sleepy she could lay her head on my lap.
