the jayce Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I think a 157 done up in a red white blue wooden top like they did on the little ones with chrome hardware would be awsome. Just wondering if they ever did a full size with that wood colored top. And how in the heck do they do that with the wood!!!!
MartyGrass Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I think you've really flipped! That would be a heavy guitar. Maybe it would work if it were a lightweight. They place very dense wood strips, similar to maple, in vats of coloring. After soaking then drying, they are glued together. Then the laminates are cut and shaped. It's an expensive process.
DetroitBlues Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 That might be cool, but I'd rather have the colors done in a burst or have a flag painted on the top.... Gibson had those for a while, the Zoot gutiars and they were ugly. Now they are off the shelves and no where to be found. I think Gibson took them back to reuse the fretboards and electronics...
JackBaruth Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I played a Zoot briefly. It kicked ass. I should have bought it but it was in the wrong color(s). DB, have you actually heard that? That would be highly interesting. That laminate construction is big-time troublesome, but the Little One certainly travels well as a result.
DetroitBlues Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 No, I didn't hear that. But what is odd is the guitar was on the shelves, never sold, never discounted, but dissappeared from the market. My guess is Gibson took them back and reclaimed them. They very well could of a painted over the wood or scrapped them. It would make sense to reuse them for other guitars.
big bob Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Someone has gotten into the eggnog awful early today!
the jayce Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Just cant help to think one would look pretty cool. Carved top with all that color would seem to be unique. Would still want the mahogany neck and body, just a layerd top. Im going to have to check out this gibson zoot everyone is talking about.
tbonesullivan Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 the zoots could have been exported for all we know. They may not have been popular in the USA, but maybe overseas they were flying off the shelves. Or they might have been sold to Sam Ash or Guitar Center who will bring them out in a few years when you can't get ebony anymore, and sell them. I remember when Sam Ash was blowing out the original robot guitars. I would have gotten one, but the reputation of the robots just made me turn away.
the jayce Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Upon furthur research into the gibson zoot. I retract the thought. Not quite the look I was imagining. Although a couple with the right color combo wasnt all that bad. I think the sg wasnt the best choice to try it with however because that guitar has a shape thats already pretty funky. A lp styled guitar with more simplstic rounded body style would compliment that wood and color figuration alot better. Nevertheless I wont be ording a 157 with that top anytime soon.
bolero Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 you could hollow the 157 out like a LW body to save weight? re: the zoots, this pic always made me laugh:

Almost bought a deeply discounted Robot SG a couple years ago. They had the guitar sent back four times and Gibson still couldn't fix it....
the jayce Posted December 15, 2011 Author Posted December 15, 2011 you could hollow the 157 out like a LW body to save weight? re: the zoots, this pic always made me laugh: The funny thing is those guitars will be worth a fortune because they where a flop and rare in about 15 years... and every collector is gonna want one. funny now but maybe not so much in the future. These will be worth about 6 grand and our flawless beautifull 150's and 157's ect will just be cresting about what they cost new when we bought em'. Just not fair but thats how it usually works. I have been around long enough now to see the oddities always have the last laugh,,,,,,, I think most of you will agree.
tbonesullivan Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 personally I ALMOST bought a zoot. They looked like they would make a great hard rock guitar, and the red and blue was was nice.
bolero Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 if Clapton had played one of those in '67 they would be all the rage
Spectrum13 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Zoot? I thought that was what a clown burst is. Guess I was off a little.
Guest HRB853370 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Zoot? I thought that was what a clown burst is. Guess I was off a little. Just a little Dan. Just a little.
kidsmoke Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Tweedy often plays a zoot. That one shown is hideous(IMHO), but a few of them looked pretty cool. This one is far more palatable, i think
