bolero Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I plugged this guy in for the first time in a while, trying to learn the Stones tune "monkey man"....that riff has always captivated me...amazed to find it's in standard tuning!! anyway that little amp sure sounds great...just plugged in & cranked the sucker up. as much as I like the main riff, the short A-B chugging change sounds righteous thru this thing!! I believe it's a '62 or '63, model is GA8 Discoverer I replaced the cheap ceramic speaker with a Bell & Howell alnico 12" from an old '60's projector http://www.bolero.comyr.com/misc/music/monkey_nt4_GA8.mp3 gtr was my '93 H150 loaded with Wolfetone Legend pups still getting random pops from my digital recorder, I think it's going back for warranty
FredZepp Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Yeah, that does sound great... Nice playing and the tone is right there. Nice sounding set-up , it records quite nicely.
JeffB Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Yeah, that does sound great... Nice playing and the tone is right there. Nice sounding set-up , it records quite nicely. +1. Good rootsy rocking sound. I like it.
hinesarchtop Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Sounds so good makes me want to eat bananas. I've got my eye on a 61 Gibson Falcon. I love old tube amps cranked like that.

LOL!!!! actually KB I have a question, there is an "echo speaker out" as well as monitor out on this thing....wondering how they're supposed to be hooked up? would be cool if I could drive a bigger amp from this little guy I have a schem here somewhere...
kbp810 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Gibson Schematics can be all over the place from model to model - but it looks like this might be the one you are referring to The Echo speaker out is just an external speaker jack in parallel with the internal speaker; monitor is a preamp out, so you should be able to run that into the input of a bigger guy
Kmenne Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 That is great! I have always liked that song and you have done a nice job of capturing the vibe. Gonna try to learn that Im a MONNNNNKAAAA
barrymclark Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Awesome! Welcome to the club of Gibson amp admirers! The amp that Brian (KBP810) is making for me is based on an old Gibson!
bolero Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 heh, thx! KB that is great info, thx I will try some of those options out!!
DetroitBlues Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Sounded great, I didn't really notice any pops. I know some reverbs for some reason have a pop every now and then. I have no idea why it does that.
koula901 Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 That does sound great. I think Brent's Colonial gets the same tone, which is why I like it so much. When you record, are you plugging the guitar directly into your recording device, or are you using an external mic, or the device's mic?
bolero Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 oh...I just put a stereo mic in front of the amp & ran that into my portable recorder didn't add any reverb or anything, that's just room ambiance if there is any
smurph1 Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 Great tone..it makes me wonder why I need so many effects..
bolero Posted December 24, 2011 Author Posted December 24, 2011 ah, I also found out my recorder is FINE....figured out my antivirus started making all my audio click & pop for some reason, I guess some kaspersky update made it more aggressive in file scanning kind of annoying
JackBaruth Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 f*****g annoying the way you never hit the wrong string, I must say.
bolero Posted December 24, 2011 Author Posted December 24, 2011 ha, there was plenty of that...it is such a weird chord shape, couldn't get my pinky to fret the proper string for a while
rjsanders Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 friend-tech collected all the '50's & most of the '60's Gibson amps, except EL84 ones, which he didn't like ( ). said almost all their cabs were made of redwood...
