Pickups for Millie Ultra Std

Rod Kinkade (Skatterbrane Custom Pickups) is going to wind them a little hotter in bridge for Josh after he heard him play. Also tighter to reduce feedback he said. All greek to me!! He also gave us special OEM pricing so that the pickups were approximately 30% less ($100 off). Plus for a custom pup builder he was really nice and listened to Josh video and made a spot on recommendation w A4s; everyone else just said our vintage PAF's will do fine. He worked with us directly with OEM pricing which Klein pickups and Throbak would not. I will let you know once we receive guitar in a few months but I would highly recommend dealing with Rod Kinkade and Skatterbrane pups. Very knowledgeble and easy to work with regarding costs w OEM pricing. Thanks for all of your imput regarding pickups and guitars, you guys have been really great and the videos sent were awesome, they really told the story more than written words ever could!!!

I am really happy and excited to hear the results of Josh's decision.

There is just one last thing I would to clear up about Jon at Throbak pickups. The reason that Klein & Jon recommend PAFs is because that is what Jimmy Page used to get the tone Josh said he liked. Secondly, Jon @ Throbak gives a lifetime guarantee and will change the magnet and/windings if you are not satisfied with the tone you get. Throbaks are PAFs in the true sense of the word in that Jon has the original Gibson winders and is constantly working to get as close as possible to the original magnet materials, wood, and plastic that was used in the late 50s. He has attended two different PSP events and I spoke with him for quite some time about pups and I believe there is no one more knowledgable about PAF pups than Jon. Some my call this pixie dust, but to me there is quite a decernible difference between what Jon makes and other pups I have tried.

I have no affiliation to Jon at Throbak other than I can't speak highly enough of his pups, the service he offers to change the pups until you are satisfied, and the lifetime guarantee.

Again to the OP, I am not trying to hijack your thread. I have not tried the pups you have chosen so I can't make any comparisons. I am sure they will be wonderful and you will love them!

I think, no matter what, Throbak pickups are way too expensive for real musicians who do not play Tonight Show caliber gigs.

That is probably 99% of them.

They are probably made for hobbyist who can make money from something else.

Because, realistically, musicians cannot really afford them.

Heritage guitars is good that way.

I almost think the same think for some models of the G brand.

Thanks to Heritage for better quality and affordability for the musicians.

Anyways, all those mentioned life time warranty and they boutique options are also available from this brand.

BG pups.

I like his Lizard model but I want to change some stuff on his design.

to be honest it should be quite easy to get a Page sound from any of the above mentioned pickups

did the OP ever post an example of the sound they are looking for? Page was the master of diverse guitar sound, from DI thru the board & tele+ fuzz, to the modded Marshalls & Hiwatts

You are right.

But also, when are we going to chase our own sound.

Page definitely had his.

Unless you play in a top 40 band, I find it pointless to chase someone else's signature sound.

I think I would even want to interpret/re-arrange popular songs my way even though I was in a top 40 band.

But, that's me :)

While I will disagree with you on the Throbaks statement you made ( which is cool with me), you are dead on about finding your own tone. It is one thing to be inspired by a guitarist tone, but to copy it is ridiculous. I want to ( for better or worse) sound lke me!!!

Just to clarify, I have not said anything good or bad about Throbaks.

It's just that I do not find it realistic for most musicians ( I think 99% ) to be able to afford 4-500 on pickups.

They are mostly too poor to afford it unless they tour Europe or they play on Jay Leno show.

I am one of the fewer luckier ones to play good paying gigs playing what I like.

I still would have hard time affording them.

I play expensive amps, yes but I am an endorser.

Just wanted to clarify and let you know about my experience so far...

Let me tell you a story...we purchased a 57 Goldtop Les Paul RI and these vintage PAF pups would not cut in a blues jam or festival situation. Nor would the Kluson vintage tuners stay in tune on g string. So we returned the gold top back to where we got it and returned with a Jimmy Page Les Paul w Alnico 3/5 pups and grover tuners. Josh won King of the Blues w that guitar. But he never played out with it, said he preferred his Clapton Strat. And at home he finds an old Ibanez semihollow and starts to play that an asks me to put in new pups into the Ibanez. Thus the search for a smaller Les Paul style semihollow!! But we weren't going to make the same mistake with vintage PAF pups on Heritage. Throbak recommended DT-102 and Klein their "wicked" PAF both were good recommendations but Skatterbrane was just easier to work with directly and gave us a great OEM discount! In the end pickups are just microphones for the strings, the tone as Eric Clapton says is in the hands, I just wanted to get out without spending a fortune and not having to replace them after the first Blues Festival or even worse have Josh leave the guitar home for his Strat. If he does we won't be looking again for another guitar for a looong while!!!! LOL Dr. Len Achiron
