schundog Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I have been fortunate enough to acquire 6 Heritage guitars, and they are all special to me in their own way. Several have stunning tops, or inlaid headstocks/fretboards and bound headstocks. My H-137 has none of the above qualities. What it DOES have is Classic Rock Balls for DAYS!! Then, roll the volume down on the guitar, and get sweet single coil sounds. I'm heading over tomorrow night to jam with a new group of guys, so I was deciding which guitars to take, and, after playing the 137 after WAY too long of a hiatus, I am struck again by how great this simply slab sounds. I ran it straight into my JJ tubed, Weber Blue Dog Speakered Peavey Classic 30, and I simply could not get a bad tone out of it. I only mention this because I've seen others feel how I initially felt about the 137; an overpriced, ugly, uncarved, un-maple-topped substitute. I'm here to tell you, it's one of the best guitars I've ever heard, hands down. There are several for sale on this forum currently. I suggest that, if you haven't experienced the fun of a 137, consider giving one a try!! Here is one sample, Guitar, cord, Classic 30, recorded by a Tascam DR-05; first recording with it. Forgive the flubs! https://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11323250&q=hi Clip 2: again, not studio quality, but you should get the idea of the tone you can get from a 137. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11323259&q=hi
High Flying Bird Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 That 137 I got for Lydia is killing me. It is the old style with humbuckers and slim neck. I want a DC built like that so bad I can smell it. The Phat Cats give it soul. And your right, just roll the volume down and it is clean.

Bird, Skydog still has that 137 DC Custom with the maple veneer cap on it, FS, I believe. You should check it out.
LK155 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Brian, I'm sure you remember me gently prodding you at PSPIII about that very H137. TOLD YOU SO !!! Lyle

What gorgeous street rod that baby was! The '32 three-window coupe of guitars. Boy, if that thing wasn't begging to play Start Me Up ....
DetroitBlues Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 ....how I initially felt about the 137; an overpriced, ugly, uncarved, un-maple-topped substitute. I felt the same way, but since I've played several LP jrs, and Steiner's 137, I realized too what soulful tone machines they really are. (Even though I complain about price)
koula901 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Hey! My 137 is my go-to guitar. Currently loaded with Fralin Noiseless P90s, it is capable of many nice sounds. This Saturday, I'll be experimenting with a Gibson Mini bucker my techie has - just curious about the sound. Am also contemplating swapping my Fralin 5% underwound, for his 5% overwound p90 pups for a hotter sound.

schundog Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Brian, what kind of pups are on your 137? Lollar P90s.
Trouble Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I guess I feel like everyone else, I love the tone and simple functionality of the 137's, but it does seem like the price would be a little more adjusted for their lack of appointments. This got me thinking, if you compare a modern SG to a modern LP or 150, the SG definately has it's own thing going on tonewise. Did the early SG's with P90's sound more like a 137 or LP jr? Maybe there are some members with experience with the old SG's here that could share?
Trouble Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Great tone Schundog, the Sweet Child clip isn't far off from the tone of the original, and the original was through a cranked marshall!

As far as tone, far different from an SG - whether standard or P90. The SG Special (w/P90s) sounded more raw, raucus, jangly. I couldn't speak to a comparison of a 137 w/hums to an SG with hums - it would be interesting to hear. Also, if there is much difference in the tone between a 137 double cut, versus one shaped like a 150.
schundog Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Brian, I'm sure you remember me gently prodding you at PSPIII about that very H137. TOLD YOU SO !!! Lyle Indeed you did, Lyle, indeed you did! haha. Still, I might not have pulled the trigger had you not let me play yours amplified the next day. I am lucky the guy still had the 137 for sale AND I hadn't lost his number by the time I finally got off my butt and bought the thing in December of last year. Great tone Schundog, the Sweet Child clip isn't far off from the tone of the original, and the original was through a cranked marshall! Thanks Trouble; The tone may not have been far off, but the execution sure as hell was!! haha. Apparently, mediocre talent mixed with Merlot-in-a-box = ham fisted attempts at some of my hero's licks!
heritagefan7 Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Great Clips Schundog---thnx so much. Great sounding git and well played (as well!)

Oh man shit happens, that is one of the first songs we put on the set list for the new band and one of the first songs we took off, great song but hard to execute at times.

Great for AC/DC but not real versatile.137's are sweet!
bolero Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 ha, sounds great!! I need a P90 Heritage at some point...have a Gibson P90 les paul at the moment & have owned two P90 SG Classics. the SG's were great guitars too
