heritagefan7 Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Anybody have one of these? I've got my 555 up for sale at present but am thinking of just keeping her after many words of wisdom from many folks here---PLUS I played it this morning and tried some new combos b/w git and amp and was really pleased. The sale was to buy a 525---but have heard an older unidentified gibby (look like maybe a Tal Farrow) w/ p90s and it sounded extremely vintage and blusey....So, thinking laminated top, big body, ebony board I thought 550, p90. Anybody have any experience here?---In my lifetime, I'm prob only gonna make enough $ to buy either a 525 or a 550, so if I keep the 555 and am saving the rest of my life for the ultimate throwback vinatge blues machine, which would it be---525 or 550 p90? (maybe a 575 p90 even?)
High Flying Bird Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 A buddy has a 550. I really like it. It has Schallers in it but the blues tones are fantastic. I guess you could stick a set of Phat Cats in there and drive on.
Gitfiddler Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I've been toying with the idea of dropping a set of SD Phat Cats in my well worn 550 BAB. Other priorities at the time........
barrymclark Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Hey... Barney Kessel and Tal Farlow just can't be too wrong.
yoslate Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Have a Super Eagle (I know...different construction) with p-90's. Big Box of Tone right there!
heritagefan7 Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 What's the price on a 550? Will K'zoo do a florentine cut on it (just curious)--If they did, would that in essence be similar to a 575? I hear you Barry--the 550's were awesome!!!! Dreamin'...

Also, you don't want to know the upcharge for Florentine cutaway (I think it is $500.... the Florentine is extremely difficult to make, or so I am told the reason for the price). But I believe a regular 550 is the same/or less than the price of a regular 575.

unikh550 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Tal had a Charlie Christian pickup along with a P-90 on his 350 shown on the cover of "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow". By the way, I'm having heritage refinish my cherry sunburst 550 next month to come as close to the medium brown and light burst of that guitar on that cover. Probably some variant of Antique sunburst. Going to have them make it as matte as possible because I'm not a fan of high gloss. Have a CC pickup from a Gibson ES-175CC on my guitar, which gives it a strident, biting tone, yet it is full and lush at times. It's never as mellow as a stock humbucker. Lollar and CC Pickups in the UK ( They are probably truer to the tone of a CC than are the Lollars, though not necessarily better.) make repros for around $300. If you really want the P-90's and if you want to sound close to '50's 350's, Stew-Mac sells Parson Street P-90's for around $50-something. You might want the variant that is faithful to the originals(no wax potting), although thay might have a little more noise than do the other P-90's that they sell. It only comes in soapbar shape, so that might be a determining factor for you, as well, if you seek that '50's vibe. Good luck. You can play cleanly with fire, as well, something that a lot of these modern elevator music sounding jazzers don't seem to care about.- Charley Bevell
