Tweed Deluxe 150 Shoot out

Kuz

Recommended Posts

Well, all this talk about new amps and new-used amps and Blues Deluxes and Tweed Deluxes..... got me inspired to get out my Tweed Deluxe and lay down some tracks comparing the pickups in my 150s.

Tracks recorded using Tweed Deluxe mic'd with a SM57 1" off the cap edge of the Celestion Blue Bell Alnico speaker. All tracks had no post-eq, same amp settings, same strings, same pick. I did add a little reverb at the end to hide all my clams.

I got to say, I have missed & loved this TONE.

Comments WELCOMED!!!!

First is "Sean" my 150 GT with Lollar P-90s (neck then bridge pickup in the middle of track)

Second is "Greeny" my 150 with Peter Green Throbaks (neck then middle out of phase then bridge pickup)
http://soundcloud.co...eluxe-150-peter

Third is "Robben" my 150 GT with SLE-101 Throbaks (neck then bridge pickup)

Thanks guys and let me know if you dig the tone!!!!

You have a very nice touch in your playing John, enjoyed it. The Peter Green middle out of phase setting really nailed his sound I thought. The tone on all was superior. Like you, I really enjoy playing to that "The thrill is gone" backing track. WELL DONE!!

I thought that each successive clip got better in tone (to my taste) than the previous, I probably like the last one best. Wonderful! Are u using Axe Fx?

Incredible playing and incredible tone Kuz - I can certainly see why you were missing that tone; that amp is really singing through that blue

Thanks a lot.

Sounds great John, nice playing. My favs in order where 1,3,2

Thanks, that is very interesting.

My favorites are 2, 1, 3. I thought I played better on 2 & 3, but that wasn't the point. I really was just trying to capture the tone on the recording.

Sorry, I guess I did some skim reading myself!!!! LOL

The recorder I used was my trusty Boss 1600-CD

You know that tone really does something for me. I've heard so much about tweed amps but have zero experience with them. Is yours a vintage Tweed Deluxe? They have 6V6s like a regular Deluxe Reverb? Love that crunch, sounds almost like an EL84 or El34 amp. Ah, I just saw the picture, posted as I was typing, looks like new, a re issue? Bet a Tele or a Strat would kill through one of those.

The Tweeds REALLY excell with single coil Strats and especially Teles. Probably, even better than my lower output Humbuckers.

For the record, the "hottest" pickups (and they aren't really HOT) are in the Greeny 150, then the 150GT P-90, then the 150GT with SLE-101s.

I almost made a clip with my Tele, but wanted to show the pickup differences in my 150s.

That is why Billy Gibons made the first several ZZ TOP albumns with a CRANKED Tweed Deluxe!!!!

I finally had a chance to check out all three.. and then go back and recheck.

I like the out of phase.. I've been using a LP with middle position out of phase since '78.. so it's a tone I am used to and like a lot.

The P-90 growl was really appealing and I liked the PG bridge driving that lead , but there was something different about each one that was good. ... No examples of "bad tone" in the bunch.

Thanks for posting ... that was enjoyable listening.

Thanks for making those samples, John. I've wanted to hear Throbaks in that type of A/B format to get a sense of their tone. I like em!

My favorite track was #3. I dug your tone, timing, and patience. It left me wanting to hear more. Well done, sir.

I went back and listen to them again and in the compressed MP4 formatt, I can hear what people like about #3. Robben with the lowest output pups (SLE-101s 7.6K Neck & 8.1K Bridge) really reveals it's clarity. At home Greeny with the slightly higher output Peter Green Throbaks (8.2K Neck & 8.6K Bridge) you can really hear a BIG PHAT neck and thicker overdriven bridge tones.

I just LOVE what Jon at Throbak does.

Thanks for the kind words.

You are hearing the clips at about 90% (the compression from the MP4 format can cause alittle loss of sparkle and add a slight amount of muddiness).

I have always that I like the Peter Green Throbaks the best (especially for the more mids, low end, and warmth) but I am starting to equally love the slightly less output of the SLE-101s and the almost single coil clarity.

I have been accused of being a Throbak homer and blinded by pixie dust from a $400-450 set of pickups (which is fine, I value everyones' opinions), but for me I have not heard or played a better pickup than Throbaks and they are worth every penny to me.

For me, I can tell a difference, period.

Yum - tweedy goodnes. Think I like 'em in reverse order, 3/2/1, although they're all good, John. And of course I'm right there with ya on Jon's pus and the clarity on the 101s!

X2
