grayta Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Just curious. My 150 had Grover Rotomatics. My old 535 had them, too (swapped them both for Grover lockers, perfect fit with no alterations). So, when I bought my new 535 (produced 2005, new old stock from Wolfe's) I assumed I'd get Grovers. Wrong. It had Schaller M6 standard tuners. Not that I mind... too much. I ordered lockers to swap in but it seems Schaller locking minis do not perfectly drop in for the M6s; no drilling is involved but they sit at a slight angle using the M6 screw hole (kinda gives my stock a dog-eared look ). Oh, well-the originals can go back on if I sell. So, now I'm wondering what the heck the rest of you have for machine heads (stock that is, but feel free to tell me if you swapped 'em out and how the new tuners fit)?
rooster Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Sperzel locking tuners. The goldy has perloid buttons, and the the black-and-tan has ivoroid. They kick serious butt, lightweight, are easy to use, and work very well. About 1/2 the weight of my Schallers that are on my Strats. rooster.
dblazer Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 All of the ones I've had have been Grovers. (4-0)
groovin Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Grover Rotos on my 2005 575. Since day 1 I've been unhappy with the amount of "play" in them, particularly on the 5th & 6th strings. I can get about 1/8th inch play before the string starts to tighten. Never had the same issue on my sperzels in the strat.
Thundersteel Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 I've got Grovers on ALL my guitars (Heritage, Gibson, & Tacoma).
PacerX Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Stock Grovers initially, swapped 'em out for Grover lockers. No extra holes required, in and out in 5 minutes.
Dick Seacup Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Nickel Grovers on the 137 and gold locking Grovers on the Milly DC.
slider313 Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Stock Grovers initially, swapped 'em out for Grover lockers. No extra holes required, in and out in 5 minutes. I have Grovers on my '88 H140CM. I ordered the locking Grovers, but the screw mount is off center. My originals have it at 6 o'clock and the new ones at 8 o'clock.
golferwave Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 I have Grovers, Sperzels, and Schallers on my Heritages and I like them all but IMHO the Grovers hold tune a little better.

GuitArtMan Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 H535 - 1: Grovers H535 - 2: Sperzels H137 - Grovers
doggy1972 Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Ive got these on mine. They work really well.Just a little more stable and hold tune for a long time. These are Grover 106CM original rotomatics, not the mini rotos with the angled mountings. Got em from Singapore via Ebay for peanuts. IMG_9656.JPG IMG_9656.JPG_thumb
yoslate Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Hello fellas... Newbie here, not just to this site, but this whole user group concept. My first post, by way of intro, was on the topic of "Any Real News on Heritage Status." Driven to it by the fact I've got "Dream Guitar" on order, and, well, you all know the rest. On the topic of tuners. I've got an (older) 576. In the mood for a little elegance and a bit of the New Yorker ambiance, I went for Grover Imperials in chrome. Love 'em, except its hard to find a "wrench" quite long enough to accommodate the key. Finally found a $3.00 cheap-o that fits. Three days in, I'm very much enjoying everyone's postings!
Gitfiddler Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Welcome! Chrome Imperials? Now you KNOW we have to have photos, right?!
Mikenov Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 I've got locking grovers on order. I was the guy with the tuning issues on my heritage post. Decided to take the plunge. My H150 came with Schaller M6's . Like someone else said on their post, the 4 and 5 tuners have too much play, don't dial in and especially the 5th tuner goes out of tune a ton. anyway, what do you do about the different screw hole on the headstock? Do you just drill another hole then ? Kinda hate doing that but when I checked the website the schaller lockers actually don't line up with the non locking tuners screw hole. pretty poor design if you ask me.

Bro, did you call Schaller or one of the big supply houses like Stew Mac? Maybe they could nail down a direct replacement for you that might not require the extra hole.
Mikenov Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 I called Stew Mac . They said with the Schaller's they aren't going to line up. Their lines don't match. But it looks like if I buy the right grovers I might get pretty close.
doggy1972 Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Mikenov. You could try the mini locking rotomatics. They are probably close but, if they are too close you could end up with the holes overlapping (if you know what I mean) You will end up with noticable holes whatever you do but, I think its worth it for the extra stability that the lockers provide. You wont be dissapointed and, you wont notice the extra holes after a while. The Schallers the heritage use on some models seem to be a bit notorious for bad stability and overshoots.

I think I still have the box they came in.
mcjustin Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Does anyone know if the Sperzels will drop in the holes for Grovers?
Mikenov Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I found this link : http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/necks/necks....seaction=tuners That should be helpful in determining if the tuning pegs will actually fit into the exiting holes in the headstock. Stew Mac has actual design layouts for all the tuners they sell on the spec area of each tuner product.
