JackBaruth Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Okay, IN THE NAME OF GOD HOW DO YOU GET THAT MUCH COMPRESSION IN YOUR SOUNDCLOUD TRACKS. I look at the visual representation of your tracks, then I look at mine: soundcloud.com/jbaruth and the difference in compression is STAGGERING. Share the secret, bro!
barrymclark Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Okay, IN THE NAME OF GOD HOW DO YOU GET THAT MUCH COMPRESSION IN YOUR SOUNDCLOUD TRACKS. I look at the visual representation of your tracks, then I look at mine: soundcloud.com/jbaruth and the difference in compression is STAGGERING. Share the secret, bro! Sort of a feel thing. I remember when I had that same question! haha. I found I got best results when I used bandpass filters to get rid of unnessary frequencies where an instrument wasn't solo or competing with other instruments. That allowed for deeper compression without the 'squish' on the individual tracks. Get an even mix and you can run run a limiter during master and raise the volume. That's what I did anyways.
Kuz Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Well there is some gain on these tracks. I also doubled each track and pan them differently (1/4 Right, full left... ect). Then when I bounce the track I try to equalize the volumes so that the tone bablances. I didn't use any "Compression" per say, just took my time mixing them. No tricks, just a lot of time and effort.
JeffB Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I cant help but get compression on my gear, I hate it. Theres no way to remove it. By the time I put it on sound cloud, youtube, reverb nation soundclick etc its just a mess of compression. I think its why any vid, tune, demo Ive done with any stomp and put it on any of those host sites, one stomp is hard to tell apart from the next. Theres one album of Jeff Becks where he used Marshall and Line6 spider amps. Its kind of a techno album(you had it coming) in some ways one of my favourite Beck albums. He pulls some good sounds out of the Line6. Slightly over the top fx wise and kind of not so traditional sounding. I dont think its the gear, its the person operating it. If I had a axfx I would still end up with a mess of compression. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16Nao-q8p3U
JackBaruth Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Everything I do, I do straight into a Tascam handheld. But... I experience some issues with volume dynamics.
DetroitBlues Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I rather enjoy the volume dynamics... Helps make me a better player.
pegleg32 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I have been asking some of the Ebay sellers why they are selling their Fx. Seems the most common answer is that they are too complicated and they just want to plug in and go. I think that is more or less what John was saying, you need to spend some time learning the machine, and researching add ons. I'm looking at a used Fx II, a Matrix GT8000FX amp, and a couple of JBL JRX115 speakers. I think if I watch Ebay I should be able to put this together complete with cables and shock rack for about $3,500 to $4,000.
barrymclark Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Yeah, that's just it. I am not willing to play around that much with it. I think that is why I prefer the Cube to most of the modellers I have dealt with. It is pretty simple. The Tech 21, although more in the line of the Mesa Mark V than a modeller, is even more my speed. Although, I rather like the way the Cube is. You just set the tone the JC channel and you are pretty well good for any model on there. No adjusting really moving from model to model.

I understand the urge to get an Axe II, but there is a waiting list for NEW Axe 2s, so I don't see you getting one used. I would recommend a used Axe 1 Standard or Ultra ($1500) a used midi floor board (Less than $100) and a used Atomic wedge (approx $500). Get the IR Cabs for $125, and all can be had at a cost less than a boutique amp head cost!!!

H Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 what would be the "plug-in-and-go" machines? Here in the UK they're called amps, Katie I have one or two - a bit old-fashioned, they even have tubes in them. Still, I get by...

Katy, I may have been a little loose in my terms there, as Howard says, they just want an amp they can plug into and play without all the fancies. John, I was surprised at some of the prices on Ebay. The standards are selling for around $1,300, the ultra's for around $1,500 and the II's for around $2,600. Of course the new II's now have a price of $2,600 so I am guessing the used prices may drop. It seems many for sale on Ebay have been purchased new, tried out and not liked for whatever reason, and put on Ebay, so they are virtually new. Of course you always take a chance on Ebay and I understand that. There are 2 II's on there now with the bid at $2,200 but they still have time to run - thought I would watch those 2. On the rest of it, you are right, it is very dependent on how much you want to spend. You can get by a lot cheaper and still have a great product, especially for home use. I am not sure of this, but it seems to me that if you already had a PA, all you would need to do would be to get the Fx and plug it in to one (or maybe 2 - left/right) of the channels and you are working? Would that be a true statement?
