heritagefan7 Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Recently posted then decided to keep my 2006 555--but, from the post a great question was asked that I simply do not know the answer to--Is the neck maple or mahogony--anyone know the answer or have any direction that I can pursue to find out?...Thx as always.
Guest HRB853370 Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Depends on how old. Mine is a 2004 and it has the maple neck. My understanding is the newer ones come stock with a mahogoney neck, unless special ordered with a maple neck. MartyGrass knows alot on this subject.
mars_hall Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Generally speaking, you should be able to tell by inspection. Mahogany will have close-set pores looking like short hairs on a head. Maple will have much wider areas with no apparent pores.

Mine is opaque black and the grain is not visible on the neck---will this still work by removing the truss rod cover? Light hue of the wood--would indicate Maple I assume and of course dark wood mahogany--unless there is some other treatment that the neck gets prior to assembly?
tbonesullivan Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 hmmmm... unstained/finished mahogany can often be quite light in color. What you may want to do is look at the back of the headstock and see if you can make out any "lines" in the reflection off the back. The maple necks, as I recall, are usually 5 piece (or 3 piece?). You often will be able to see that on the back of the headstock.
