MartyGrass Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Those of you who have toured the plant will appreciate this video. Gibson has more walking space and lighting than Heritage. It's equipment is more sophisticated. Gibson probably is cool with the OSHA police, too. But notice that everyone at Gibson looks like he could be replaced. Each has a small role in any guitar. This truly is a factory. Now, you may think that impersonal factories don't create "hand made" guitars. But corporations are people, it turns out! Enjoy. #!

Vincelewis Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hey Guys, One of my students just got a brand new Custom Shop G ES 175.....trust me when I say we have the BEST made American guitars of all from the Zoo......and the prices are fair as well....enough said....
High Flying Bird Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 +1 And how... You of all people would have to ask how. Dirty old man. I didn't watch the video. I read the reviews here and skipped it. If I lived as close as some of you do to 225 Parsons they would have a restraining order out for me.
DetroitBlues Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 My local luthier was offered a job at the Gibson Custom shop several years ago. Went down there, interviewed with them, showed them what he could do, they called him back and said they'd love to hire him...for get this, $8 an hour.... Not exactly an expert craftsman wage......

They have a restraining order filled out with your name and pinned on the picture wall at 225. It's absence last PSP suggests they hannded it in to the authorities as soon as they knew you were coming to town. I wasn't asking, I was affirming the Maestro's statements about Heritage ala the Howard brothers and Dr. Fine.

Heh...! This would be the word. Good to hear from you, Vince. Hope you're well.

This story and the general feel of that video doesen't leave me feeling all warm and fuzzy about the G brand. $8 an hour? For a trained luthier? Good grief.
Spectrum13 Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Was the video their custom shop? I would think a luthier would be under employed at any of the stations shown.

MartyGrass Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 This story and the general feel of that video doesen't leave me feeling all warm and fuzzy about the G brand. $8 an hour? For a trained luthier? Good grief. They certainly don't need luthiers to put the same nut on the same bolt all day long. They need factory workers. I'm sure Gibson has some excellent luthiers on staff. They probably have little to do with most guitars leaving the plant. I've talked to a couple of people who have worked for Heritage in a similar way. They were trained in one area with no real background in general luthiery. Had they stayed at Heritage I'm sure they would have become jack of all trades eventually. I'm guessing that doesn't happen as quickly or as often at a large factory like Gibson though. You could end up slack banding for a long time before an opening in the pickguard installation department was available.
