Fernando Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 and the last...yum! Holy crab! Wonderful stuff! Congrats on building the Strat, by the way.
knopfler74 Posted February 5, 2012 Author Posted February 5, 2012 MMMM, Lobster!! If you bring enough for everybody, we'll let you come to PSPV in August! haha HAHA I was actually thinking about trying to come out to PSPV in August. Ya know, lobster keeps just fine, alive and on ice with no water. Seafood snacks might be able to be arranged
tbonesullivan Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I definitely prefer .10s on Gibson scale instruments. .09s or 09top .10 bottoms are just too flimsy on that shorter scale. .09s work well on "fender scale" , but for Gibson scale, just too short. There of course are also limits to what notes you can play within a given scale length. On bass the Low B is almost at the limit for 34" scale. On a 35 or 35 1/4 scale instrument, it sounds a lot more stable. At that scale though you usually would use lighter strings up top to keep the tension even.
MartyGrass Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I use these on my H150. No squeaks and stable bass strings.
DetroitBlues Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Nice playing, I can hear trumpet in that guitar phrasing! If anyone remembers, the wah-wah pedal was invented for the purpose of simulating horn tones... Fortunately, Hendrix had a better idea....
DetroitBlues Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 and the last...yum! Now that's my kind of Superbowl party!
Guest HRB853370 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 and the last...yum! That would make my wife jealous-her being from New England. Our favorite restaurant is Newicks! And if Madonna would get off the screen maybe we can watch New England beat NY!!

DetroitBlues Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Sure did thanks. I have to explore a swap, but maybe my ears are not refined enough to warrant it. I have a Deluxe Reverb and I am trying to figure out the ice pick description, as I have not noticed that when playing through it. I am not saying the reverb is bad really on the Delta, but I can get a more vintage reverb with the Fender box. Are you a teacher now knopfler? The Deluxe is a Tube driven reverb unlike the solid state on the Delta. I have to admit, the KBP RD amp is one I should of never parted with. It has a much richer reverb and tremolo circuit than the Detla blues...
stratocaster83 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I've been using 11's for years: it gets painful when I play a lot, but your finger get used to it. the pain is worthi t: more mass means more tone! I'm used with 11's on strats (longer scale) too, but 12's sounds too dark on shorter scale guitars. I might try 12's on the semi-hollow for more jazzy tones ;-)

I might try 12's on the semi-hollow for more jazzy tones ;-) I haven't had a problem with 12s sounding dark unless I've used nickel or chrome. Alex Skolnick uses D'Addario Half Rounds 12s. You can judge on this video if you think the sound is dark. I don't think so at all. There is little sustain, but that's a different matter. I attribute the plunky sound to the tone sucking TP and rosewood bridge, both which cause rapid decay. Of course that's a goal in a standard archtop. But the brightness is there.
stratocaster83 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 tried 12s on my les paul when I was into blues, years ago, and I found them too dark sounding for my tastes, especially the G string (22? can't remember). I use elixir strings and they aren't that common here in italy: not every shop carries 11s. I bought mine in germany because they are cheaper. I might check if they carry 12s ;-)
DetroitBlues Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I liked by 11's, but when I played 1/2 step down in my tuning. In standard tuning, 10's are just fine.
