MartyGrass Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 2001 Antique Natural Super Kenny Burrell #13. ETA next Monday. Alrighty! I didn't think this would come to be.
koula901 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 That is a classy looking instrument! Congrats!
FredZepp Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Excellent news.. I'll bet that you'll find this one to be a something special...
Guest HRB853370 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Wow! How did you come upon this one!?
Gitfiddler Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Wow, Mark, that is amazing! Congratulations!
MartyGrass Posted February 14, 2012 Author Posted February 14, 2012 Wow! How did you come upon this one!? The guy I got this from puts Brentrocks to shame in the way he flips guitars. He's got GAS real bad for Gibson archtops. He's sold a couple of Super Eagles, the Kenny Burrell, and a very nice Golden Eagle in a single week to get this:
Joe Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Very nice. How does it sound unplugged, and is it loud enough to play that way?
skydog52 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Is that a dot on the switch tip? HRWs? Nice one Mark!
heritagefan7 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 That is absolutely AWESOME---I hope that it is, in every way, as amazing as it looks here in this pic. Beautiful!
golferwave Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 That is just elegance and ultra fine craftsmanship! Enjoy!
MartyGrass Posted February 14, 2012 Author Posted February 14, 2012 Is that a dot on the switch tip? HRWs? Looking for that dot on the tip can be maddening, especially on eBay. But this one has a real dot, not just a glare. I know the HRW sounds great in the neck on archtops. I guess I'll find out about the bridge.
Kuz Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Incredible!!!!! I am going to make a prediction that this guitar is going to stay in your collection for a very long time!!!! I think most KB signatures are BLUE, so this one might be much rarer!!!!
MartyGrass Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 Most of them are blue. I have seen almond bursts and another natural. But blue is the signature color. There are not many of the Super Kenny Burrells. I'd like to think that they are rare because they are made of limited precious materials. But they are not (although the HRWs may be on the way to extinction). They are scarce because there is not that much call for big archtops these days compared to the 1950s. The remaining need is partially met by offshore companies. Many who buy large archtops shell out big bucks for boutique carves (Bernadetto, Palen, etc.) and Gibson reissues. That leaves a small group for which Heritage competes, and most of them opt for the Super Eagle probably due to cost. Joe asked about playing it acoustically. I haven't touched it yet. But I'm sure it will sing nicely without an amp. I've been told and have found to be true that the archtop can do anything. Technique, strings and picks are crucial in tone.
campfire Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Congrats, come to papa, big mama! Now that's a thick solid jazz sound.
schundog Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Another stunning piece added to the Marty Grass family. My wallet thanks me for not having the archtop bug; For me, they are like a high-end sports car; I can appreciate them and admire them, but, probably because it wouldn't be in the cards financially, I don't even get a slight tingling to try to acquire one. I hope you enjoy this one for a long time, Mark!
blueox Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Congratulations! That should serve you and your music very well.
