Yeah - play around with the order of things. It's an interesting experiment. I was surprised to find that my fuzz pedal didn't care where it was, of course, it's not a germanium fuzz and that could be why. This whole thing about where is the ideal spot to put in the buffered pedal is a whole new territory for me.

some people will put a clean boost at unity gain (no gain increase) at the front of their rig to "drive" the signal. The electronics on the guitar are passive, and due to capacitance/etc it's best turn it to an active signal as quickly as possible, as increasingly long effects chains, even with true bypass, can mess with the tonal shape.

One of the big reasons that the active electronics were put on the stingray basses from MusicMan was to help with signal response. The active EQ was almost a bonus afterthought.

Didn't know that some basses have active electronics. Cool!

most "pro-level" basses these days do. I think all music man basses have active electronics. A lot of ibanez and yamaha basses have active electronics available. Almost all carvin basses have active electronics, though they also have a pull pot to disable the active electronics. G&L basses except for the SB-2 and J-2 models all have active electronics. The main reason why people get them though is more about having the ability to have active EQ's on the basses themselves. You can get a LOT of variety even from single pickup basses when you have active EQs on board. The pickups themselves are still passive, so we're not talking pickups like EMGs here. There are also a lot of aftermarket preamps available out there that are made to drop into standard passive basses.
