NHD - This may have been used as an oar by the Navy SEALs

So a while back, someone posted a link to this (BigBob?) and I was like, meh. Then I missed my shot at a Heritage mandolin. To top it off, about 6 months ago, I quit using tobacco after like, 20 years. I wanted to reward my discipline, by violating my discipline. I thought back about this thing, and how I've seen very few basses from Heritage out there, and maybe this one should be rescued.

Today, it arrived. It is a 1996 Heritage HB-5 5-string bass. It is really quite neat, but not without its issues. Off the bat, this thing has seen some wear, which I take to mean it was either a great player, or it was used as an oar by the Navy SEALs. The next most obvious item is the whacky replacement tuner. According to the seller, the previous owner of this bass was a professional player in Texas, and broke the original tuner off, replacing it with what was available. The fret board is about as dry as the Gobi desert. The black is so black, that in the sunlight, it almost appears olive drab green. It is a neck thru bass, really light and comfortable. Then again, I'm a rodeo clown and know next to nothing about basses. I think I'll send the pics to Ren & Marv, see if they can tell me what is/isn't original, etc.

Any how, I'd be interested to hear from the group what you think would be appropriate rescue measures. Here it is as it came right out the box:

I like it! It is rare for sure! The guys in Kalamazoo are your source for info, and maybe a restoration. Good luck!

I'm really not thinking refin. I like the "patina". I would like to buff it out, see what comes off, but for sure, try and tackle that aftermarket tuner. For whatever reason, it bothers me.

Oh yeah , replace that odd tuner for sure. And some clean and polish on the body, oil the fretboard, then make sure the electronics are 100%... and you're done. It should make a great bass.

I have never seen one of those before! Awesome bass Victor...congrats!!!

You wanna buy it, then sell it back to me, just so it takes its natural course and doesn't tear a hole in the universe?

Sweet.

I've been watching that for a couple of months on Gbase and I was kind of close to pulling the trigger.

I was just trying to come up with a plausible story to tell the wife.

You saved me a lot of groveling :sad2:

Was that listed on Gbase? Nice score for the price.

Yeah, that is the one.

I know what you mean. I went back & forth on it for a while.

I wouldn't refinish it, if that's what colour is was from the factory....those are battle scars :D maybe clean it up a bit/buff it out though

congratulations!!

what are the pickup specs? I'm assuming they're active?

Yeah, those are EMG active pickups, which I suppose explains the 9v battery in the control cavity.
