CJTopes Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Been a while since I've posted here! I'm thinking of swapping out PUPs in my Millie DC. Currently I have gold HRWs. The Bridge PUP has the gold plating worn off the top by the low E string. I'd like to try a set of Seymore's (model yet to be determined but I'm thinking 59s) How ever the gold plated 4 wire Seymores that I've considered are pretty pricey. I'd like to recoup most of the cost by selling the HRWs. Any idea what there going for these days?
mars_hall Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 There was a set on ebay earlier today in the $300 range
CJTopes Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 Was that asking price or did they sell for that?
mars_hall Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Minty-2005-GOLD-HRW-Heritage-Rendal-Wall-Neck-Bridge-Pickup-Set-/140701265793?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item20c272ef81 $345 at this point and auction is still going.
Gitfiddler Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 That is quite an ad for those HRW's. Makes me want to buy a set!! Seriously, I'm a huge fan and have them in most of my Heritage gitfiddles. That probably makes me one of the cult.
Blunote Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Who knows, now that they're no longer available maybe someday the HRWs will be worth more than the guitars their installed in. It seems like the neck pup is very warm, creamy sounding, while the neck has a bright nasel sound like a horn. Together, they can dial in a wide range of tones suited to jazz, rock, or even bluegrass. I love 'em.
Fernando Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I bought a pair of HRWs a few months ago, and they are now with the guitar tech, to be installed on my H-555. Then I read the ad and saw this: Heritage Guitar Company is reported to require that you ship back your Heritage guitar to the factory to have these HRW pickups installed. Is this true?

Nah, they used to only sell them direct so you had to mail your guitar to Heritage in order to receive the HRWs. Ren, claimed he had a few secret tips for installing the HRWs, but I think that was the 4 point floating washers for archtops only. Your fine having them installed by someone else.
CJTopes Posted February 17, 2012 Author Posted February 17, 2012 Thanks for bringing up the 4 screw PUP rings. It looks like I'll also need new rings. Haven't priced them yet. Ball Park on what they are going for?

I guess if anything goes wrong, it's possible to correct eventual mistakes by re-installing them, anyway, right?
Kuz Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Thank you John. I guess if anything goes wrong, it's possible to correct eventual mistakes by re-installing them, anyway, right? Unless you are having HRWs installed in an archtop, there is no wrong way to install the HRWs. And you don't need the 4 hole Schaller pickup rings. Yes, these offer the ability to level the pups, but I have used the tradition 2 hole pup rings and they looked better IMHO and sounded as good. Also, remember I only like HRWs in archtops, I think they are to hi-fi sounding to me in solid bodies or semis.... But your opinion my vary.
Fernando Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 In this case, it's a 555. Thanks for the input, I feel much better.
Gitfiddler Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 In this case, it's a 555. Thanks for the input, I feel much better. Fernando~ My first experience with HRW's was in my brand new 555. They will never leave that axe!!
DetroitBlues Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 If you're concerned with the gold wearing off the HRW's, you could always just replace the covers....
CJTopes Posted February 18, 2012 Author Posted February 18, 2012 If you're concerned with the gold wearing off the HRW's, you could always just replace the covers.... Too late for that!. It's worn off at the very top of the Bridge PUP just by the low E. If I have the 4 hole pup covers and I put in a set of Duncans will I need new pup rings?
mars_hall Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Usually the Schaller rings will accommodate a center screw like SD uses. The screw will be a different thread
Guest HRB853370 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Fernando~ My first experience with HRW's was in my brand new 555. They will never leave that axe!! 10-4. My only set is in my 555 and that Git is not going anyplace.
Fernando Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Fernando~ My first experience with HRW's was in my brand new 555. They will never leave that axe!! The good news keep piling up. Thanks, Gitfiddler, I hope we get to play those two together some day.
tbonesullivan Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I have a pair in the Kahuna. Those pickups are going for more than 1/3 of what I paid for the guitar. Dang. They aren't ever leaving the kahuna though. If i want a LP guitar with high output pickups, I'll stick something punchy in the H150CM.
Blunote Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Relative to other pups I've seen in H brand guitars, the HRWs are pretty hot. So much so that those of us with them seem to adjust them lower. It's interesting to hear the term Hi-Fi used to describe them. As a small child, I remember our tube driven High Fidelity stereo console. It was a definate step up from the old gramaphones & radios. So, I equate hi-fi with a very clean, smooth, full, static free sound -which is pretty much what I want from a set of pickups. How that term came to be used to disparage any guitar tone is a bit of a mystery to me. Kind of like criticizing food for tasting too good. I've got a set of Seth Lovers in one of my solid bodies, and it too has a nice full, smooth sound when played clean. And when I want an overdriven, or distorted sound, both rock!
