MartyGrass Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 The 2005 Super Eagle has landed. It is cross braced and has a HRW with the 4 point mount. It's good looking. The only option besides the pup and bracing is the cloud inlays. The neck is medium and straight. I was surprised at how light it is. It weighs 7 lbs. 0 oz. The top taps out really nice, as does the back. The box is very resonant. Acoustically, it is the loudest SE I've played. I tried it amplified for a short while. I couldn't believe the difference taking the "extra" hardware off the top makes. It sounds like my old Johnny Smith. I don't know if this is tap tuned, but the only other Heritage I've had that sounded like this was. Ren Wall told me sometimes the archtops just happen to sound that good and don't need tap tuning. I expect that these good resonance qualities mean that it will tend to feedback. That's the price you pay.
skydog52 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Beauty! You are building quite an hollowbody arsenal.
Genericmusic Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 That is a really nice looking guitar. What type of strings will you use? How or what will you amplify it with?
MartyGrass Posted February 27, 2012 Author Posted February 27, 2012 The guitar came with Elixer Polyweb 10-46s. I thought I'd vomit until I tried them. There's very little squeak with them. I have a manly set of George Benson 14-55s at home. I haven't played anything that heavy in a very long time, and I know it will hurt so good.

You indicated that this is one of the loudest archtops you've ever played. I bet if you put on a set of Thomastic Jazz BeBops, that thing would ring like a freshly tuned Steinway. They are my new favorites.
RhoadsScholar Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Quite interesting observation about having less hardware on the top. It makes sense though. More acoustic top to resonate. I'll be interested (and standing by) to hear your comparisions with the other archtops in your collection there. Inquiring minds will want to know Mark. I can't think of a better way to spend an evening.
TalismanRich Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 After spending the afternoon playing HeritageFan7's two archtops, I'm really thinking that there's a hole in my collection. I find myself trolling the waters of ebay looking at Guilds and Heritages. When you get tired of the feedback issue, let me know and we'll talk about putting you out of your misery!

I'm not sure I'll stick with them. The low E booms. I'll look at the BeBops. Thanks.
