H Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 The Limey has developed a nasty crackle which has been diagnosed, finally, as oscillation. It's now in amp hospital in the very capable hands of Steve Rowse, one of the UK's premier tube amp guys. See you in a month, baby...
pegleg32 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Sorry to hear that H, hope it gets better quickly!!!
DetroitBlues Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 If you were in the US, it would only be a week or two depending on shipping.

Well, if that doesn't work out, one of the top surgeons in the USA is our very own KBP810.
Hfan Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. Any theories on the cause? Lead dress is a common one.
H Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. Any theories on the cause? Lead dress is a common one. You're right on the money here, Pete. The amp guy is talking about taking some of the components off the eyelet board and relocating them on the tube sockets, etc, so some of the wiring can be drastically shortened. He's also going to use shielded wiring in various places. I wish I knew enough about electric circuits to do more troubleshooting myself. I really dislike having to turn over my stuff to someone else to be fixed. It's not so much the money, it's the time I lose it for and knowing that a problem has beaten me :-/
H Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 Sorry to hear that H, hope it gets better quickly!!! Thanks Don, I'll post some clips when she's singing again
Steiner Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I hope she comes out felling strong again! At least she'll be dressed to kill.
Jimbob Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 It sounds as though it's in very good hands.......
H Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 It sounds as though it's in very good hands....... Better hands than mine at least! Should be firing on all cylinders come May, Jim

H Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 I meant to say if you were in the US and it was a KBP amp.... It's true, DB, and I think I'd have more gear problems if I lived there. So much choice!
tsp17 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Sorry to hear that H, hope it gets better quickly!!! +1, that is no fun.

It's not so much the money, it's the time I lose it for and knowing that a problem has beaten me :-/ Don't feel bad Howard, I monkeyed around with equipment for many years in my previous profession, thought I would be able to do anything on an amp with some informal internet study. My results where ok but nothing like what was accomplished when an amp specialist got their hands on it. Just a matter of the pro tech having the experience.
DetroitBlues Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 It's true, DB, and I think I'd have more gear problems if I lived there. So much choice! I work with the guy. Just imagine how I feel? Thankfully, I don't have the money to be buying his amps or else I'd be all over more of them!

You should get a discount, DB! All that promotion and testing you do for him should be worth a 5E3 by now surely?

Good luck hope it's not major and you get it back soon.

On a side note, I think if my grandfather had been an electronics guy and not a shadetree mechanic, I would be building my own amps and paying to get my oil changed, aah, what could have been.
H Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 Thanks for the kind thoughts, Trouble, it's in the hands of a highly regarded amp tech so my finger-crossing should be unnecessary By the way, the only electrical circuits I'd worked on before building the 5e3 were pots and pickups. The only woodwork I'd done was in high school thirty years previously. It's never too late to give a shot!

Trouble Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I think a V-8 in an amplifier cabinet might be really cool, ya know? Would be one of a kind for sure! Would blow the doors off anything! Yeah, and with a tranny, wheels and a cargo bed you could use it to haul all your gig gear. I might need to collaborate with a good amp guy!

H Posted March 31, 2012 Author Posted March 31, 2012 So, H, is your amp still in the shop? Yes Katie, Steve Rowse is a busy guy and has a four week minimum turnaround. It doesn't help that Easter is right in the middle! I'm expecting to pick it up around 20th April or so. Then it goes to 12
H Posted April 2, 2012 Author Posted April 2, 2012 Got confirmation today that The Limey is coming home on the 22nd April
