Neck Profile, H 150

I remember, reading in one of the posts, in the past, that Heritage had come around to not making 60s slim necks anymore, and began making them a little thicker (not baseball bat size) because so many people requested that. Does anybody here, recall what year that might have started? I'm thinking it was around 2010, or so. Does anyone remember this discussion?

Don't know. I don't like a thick neck at all. You must be, "in the market for used."

My 2007 137 is a base ball bat and 2006 150 is medium. It all depended on how the dealer ordered it me thinks.

I thought I read some where that Marv mentioned the neck profile changes over the years reflects the trends in the market of customer tastes.... Back in the 80's, everyone want thin, shredder like necks, in the 90's to the mid 00's, being able to really dig in a guitar that had some meat to it became important. In the last few years, everyone raves about guitars that feel like those built in the 50's, (i.e. baseball bat necks).

That topic came up for us at PSPI. Ren mentioned the profiles changing to reflect how the special orders were coming in. Marv mentioned it again during the PSPII tour. And I'm sure its come up at each one since. I have a 2009 Millie DC that has a ball bat neck. Verges on being too large. But since Marv carved it for me personally I'll never change it. The neck on my Prospect is a bit fatter than "normal" and feels perfect. My nephew has a 1989 H150 that has one of the slimmest necks I've ever played. Def a "slim 60s" profile.

I believe it was in 2010 that I noticed the necks getting the bigger carve. The 25th anniversary models I've played have a "59" like neck. All of the 150's in my friends guitar shop (2011 models) are the larger profile as well. The best part is if you order a new one you can get any neck carve you wish from the Parsons Street Custom Shop.

I would say ... no. At least not for me. Never understood the association of slim necks and speed.

I would only say thinner is faster depending on your style of play. For shredder types who barely touch the strings, the thinner neck might be faster, but for playing blues or rock, not so much. The thinner necks causes more hand fatigue when chording or doing a lot of bends.

For me the action height has all to do with speed, I can play just as fast on a big neck and a slim neck if the actions are identicle. That said my hand likes the larger neck. I have an old archtop from the 30's that has no truss rod so the neck is a vee profile and about 1.25 at the 12th fret and is not hard to play at all but not as comfy as a rounded neck like my 150. I have a Warmoth strat copy with a super slim neck and I never play it. I just cannot stand the way it feels, one day I will change the neck for a large one and then I will have a strat again. Just my 2 cents.

weighing in. Neck feel is very important to me, having a fatter neck makes me feel like I have more control over my fretting hand (in my case, right hand) and I agree with DB - less fatiguing. Plus, a fatter neck may contribute to more sustain.

I agree completely on the fatique - I used to always think I wanted/needed a slim neck... until I tried a thicker neck out. I felt much less fatigue and actually found it easier to stretch my fingers.

To each their own though, and I'm still a hack player anyways so take my opinion on the matter with a grain of salt :icon_joker:

My 535 has a thicker neck..Not Huge, but substantial..It's a 2010, if that helps..

I don't necessarily think a slim neck translates into faster playing..I've never been able to play fast anyway..But I do like the feel of a thin neck..Just seems more comfortable to me..As Always YMMV.. :icon_salut:

I am different in that I don't have a strong preference in neck thickness. I love my 150 with a very slim 60's neck.. probably my favorite to play.

But my other 150 is a medium C and great also.

I have a '58 LP replica that has a really chuncky neck and that one is a blast also..

For me it's all about the set-up... if it's set-up right, I can enjoy playing it.
