WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF THESE TONES?

My KBP amp will be here tomorrow, so tonight I'm messing around with Guitar Rig 4 in my Presonus Studio One v2 software. I've created two tones here...for your listening, uh...critique?

I chose the introduction to the Goo Goo Dolls song "Slide" for this little comparison

Here's what the two tones are

Example 1 on the track

AC30 amp model with matching cab

Pedal style compressor in the emulation as well.

MD 421 mic model from guitar rig used as well

Slight dead air time between examples

Example 2 on the track

Fender Twin Reverb amp model with matching cab

Pedal Style compressor inthe emulation (same settings as the AC30 example)

MD 421 mic model from guitar rig used as well (set in same "virtual spot" as the AC30 example)

No master buss or master track compression, EQ, or other wizardry used on the recording.

Guitar is my Heritage 157 with Dimarzio 36th Anniversary pickups - Bridge pickup only for these examples.

So, opinions, thoughts, rants, Axe FX is better? (Yeah, I know it is, so we can probably skip that ;) )

Thanks Guys/Gals/Guitar nerds

Which do you like more? Which sounds better to your ears and why?

THANKS, you guys rock, as always. I really love this forum because the discussions you all usually get into are, for the most part, intelligent, respectful, and interesting!

Note: I obviously rushed on the second example. Not sure why I was in such a hurry for that take...DOAH!!! :icon_puke_l:

Oh, and I played it without the capo or alternate tuning Rzeznik uses most of the time. I've watched him personally play it both ways, and in the key I did it here....when his voice was tired at a show WAAAAY back in the day

I like the 1st example. Second one sounded thin.

What skydog said. First, a little "rounder," more warm, fuller representation of the spectrum. Were I playing the rigs, number 1 would get the nod!

I, like others REALLY liked #1.

#2 was too thin for me.

As for is the Axe-Fx better...... well on those tones, maybe the same. But I would say I have 78 more amps that we can compare.... ha, ha. IT'S ALL GOOD IF IT SOUNDS GOOD!!!! THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll disagree with the 2nd sounding thin, it just has less volume and less gain. Just more clean. For a live band situation, it would probably sound better. The actual song has a cleaner sounding guitar, much like recording two.

Of the two, I think that #2 would work better in a mix... It seemed like it was a little better balanced when I brought the volume up to the level of the first. There was a bit of peakiness for me on the first clip. I was listening through my headphones, it might play out a bit differently through monitors.

I'm a Guitar Rig 4 user too:) It's a great tool for the recording process.

I'd like to hear a revised number two with the guitar's tone rolled off a bit and a revised number one with the mids dialled out a fair bit.

Thanks for the clips - nice work :)

Both sounded good. Good work. Would like to hear each in a mix of drums , bass etc to see which sounded better.

These are ALL outstanding points, and because the weekend is coming up, maybe I can expand this little exercise and add drums and some bass.

Kuz, - SOOOOO jealous! You're right, you do have 78 other amps to play with!

nice....

I like the first one, not sure if because it's a bit louder or just more low end EQ

but I bet either would work fine with drums/bass mixed in
