koula901 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 What do we do to solve flubby bass? Is that the same thing as sag? Do I have to swap out my speaker, or is there an easier fix?
SouthpawGuy Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 FB = Fender Blues Jnr ? Is it doing it with a clean sound or overdriven ? Are you using the amps od or a pedal ? If it's farting out on the bass end with the amps own overdrive you could try using a ts pedal to tighten up the low end. I only use the Jnr clean and use pedals to get od tones.
koula901 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 It sounds flubby only when I'm using my high distortion pedal. At first, I was afraid it was the 150 b/c it's chambered, but as soon as I took off the distortion, it sounded nice and tight.
DetroitBlues Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 BillM mod kit... He also recommends the Swamp Thing speaker.... I have the Jenson in mine, only because that's the "upgraded' feature on the tweed model.
SouthpawGuy Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Some od pedals produce more bass than others. My Blues Jnr also has a Jensen speaker.
pegleg32 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Katy, I'm guessing you are using the Freakish Blues Alpha Drive - a VERY bassy OD. Turn your tone knob all the way to treble. It took me a while to figure that out and I almost gave up till I did that and it is now my fav OD.
koula901 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Actually it does fine with the Freakish Blues pedal. What it doesn't like is the Wampler Super Plextortion. That seems to be one tricky pedal.
Gitfiddler Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 From your descriptions it sounds like the stock speaker may be the cause. There are a number of good options to consider, from Jensen, Weber, Tone Tubby, Eminence and Celestion. It might take a bit of research, but a speaker swap in that cabinet can make a huge difference. The Bill M mod is another option, but we've talked about that a lot around here.
koula901 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Yeah, it's already had Bill M-type mods. Guit - thanks for the speaker suggestions, I'm also aware that Bill made some suggestions for speaker swaps on his page.
pegleg32 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Maybe I'm not getting it here, but if it does fine clean, and it does fine with the Alpha Drive, wouldn't that point you towards the Wampler?
koula901 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Yup. It's Monday . . . maybe I'm not thinking straight . . .
tulk1 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Write Brian Wampler and ask him. I used to have regular emails with him when he was mostly modding pedals. Nice guy. He'll tell you how to work the pedal to tighten up the bottom end. Then again, it just may be the speaker can't handle it, as suggested.
koula901 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 I wonder if this is why the Wampler SuperPlex was discontinued. Good suggestion, I'll try contacting him.
Blunote Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Maybe I'm not getting it here, but if it does fine clean, and it does fine with the Alpha Drive, wouldn't that point you towards the Wampler? "I like your thinkin' Cowboy" -Buzz Lightyear
DetroitBlues Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I wonder if this is why the Wampler SuperPlex was discontinued. Good suggestion, I'll try contacting him. Hopefully it works out for you.
