H555rocks Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 I recently have been looking to upgrade amps and get one with the power to really play a gig. I'm looking for something not terribly expensive but something that sounds pretty good with bluesy/jazzy stuff. I'm kind of looking in the range of 40-65 watts. Any help is great.
schundog Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 I can't help you with jazz; a lotta guys like solid state stuff for that. For bluesy gigs, don't dismiss a BillM modded Fender Blues Junior, only 15 watts, but a loud 15 watts. Peavey Classic 30 is another great used buy, $300-400 used, 30 loud tube watts. Brent has a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 4X10 for sale right now that would give you a lot of creamy tube headroom. That's more in the wattage range you mention, but you may not need that much power, to be honest. Good Luck!
H555rocks Posted April 14, 2012 Author Posted April 14, 2012 One how much is brent selling that for, and two idk like $400-500 is what im looking at.
Kuz Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Pedals for Overdrive or not. Two channels or one. Reverb or not. And knowing the budget is really a must before we can give you a recommendation. A lot of things to consider before you can a recommendation for "bluesy/Jazz" stuff.
iim7v7im7 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 I have no direct knowledge, but I might check these out... http://www.bogneramp...x_alchemist.php http://www.egnateram...12xCabinet.html http://www.fender.co...?prodNo=2230500 http://www.peavey.co...3B30%2F112.html http://www.vhtamp.com/avsp11220.html

Brent's is at $490 with a footswitch for channel switching, plus shipping. Make him an offer! He wants to get rid of it. It's in the Non-Heritage section in the marketplace under Huge Gear Sale, or something like that. Just know that it is probably pretty heavy, and very loud. That said, the Fender Hot Rod Series of amplifiers, which include the Blues Junior, Hot Rod Deluxe and Hot Rod Deville are supposedly the best selling amps in the world. Many choose to poo-poo them, but I guess I'm a Fender amp guy; I love the creamy cleans, and they take pedals very well. Good luck, young man!

May I recommend a Peavey Delta Blues? Very popular amp, priced right, made in USA, and its 30 watts will provide more than enough for you to play a gig, unless you are trying to play a stadium. It has an overdrive channel, it has reverb and also tremolo!!! I love mine. Detroit Blues has one too and he loves his. Blueox also has one.

Both amps work great for cutting through the band. The volume level on either amp is never even close to 50% of its max volume. You cannot go wrong either way considering they are tube amps not modeling/solid state amps. Tube amps are significantly louder. Both those amps are excellent clean amps, but they both have a preamp overdrive that does great with a humbucker or single coil guitars. I really like the Blues Jr right now because its much lighter than the DeltaBlues by nearly 15 lbs. plus its a 1x12 versus a 1x15. There are some tone differences and the DeltaBlues can get much more grittier without using any pedals. You really shouldn't need more than what either of those amps should offer. Look on Guitar Center's used gear section and you should find a good deal on both amps. The BillM mods has several different kits, one of which can turn the Blues Jr. from a 15 watt amp to a 30 watt amp which will help with clean headroom at much louder volume.
smurph1 Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Classic 30s are nice amps!! 2 channels all tube, made in USA..Even though i now have a handmade KBP810 Cavern Club AC-30 clone, i still use my Classic as a back up or practice amp! Just Sayin..
DetroitBlues Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 And I switch back and forth between the Blues Jr. and DeltaBlues sometimes in the same practice time... I love how each amp has a similar tone, but not exactly the same. Both really work for my Blues/Rock stuff. The band likes the DeltaBlues a little more because I get more dirty tones out of it....
