MartyGrass Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I have the same strings on a few similar guitars with different pickups. All of the guitars are semi-hollows or very thin hollows. The pickups include Fralin Humbuckers, Lollar Low Winds, Seth Lovers, and Gibson 57s. My new H555 has SD 59s.The one pair that stood out was the 59s. It is darker with more mids. The rest were more similar to each other than different.
michaeljames Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Interesting! I have a H150 with 59s and a LP with 57s. The Les Paul sounds better to me. The 59s sound weaker and brighter than the 57s. I am planning to put a set of vintage 60s Gibson PAFs (patent sticker) into the H150 tomorrow...
nicknickhall Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I happen to have a heritage 530 with a 59 in the bridge and a jazz hb-1 in the neck (i think). I can't get over how good they sound together. I have been playing a lot with the 59 dimed and the bridge pup spun off a tad. sounds fat, full, and nicely percussive. That last sentence probably makes no sense but this is far and away my favorite guitar.
mtpatty Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 my LP has a '57 in the neck and BB3 in the bridge- great combo my H150 (OSB) has Bare Knuckle Abraxas set- excellent! my H150 (BLT) has Rio Grande Texas and BBQ combo (good pickups, but not what I am looking for)- I am switching them for Suhr Aldrich's in the very near future (unless I can find some bare Knuckle Emeralds at a decent price)... the Emeralds have-IMHO- the best sound of any pickup I have ever played or heard the Aldrich's- are easily 2nd choice and not nearly as pricey!

Combining both pickups and rolling off one or the other is one of Larry Carlton's and John Scofield's tone tricks. (Plus a custom built Dumble OD, but that's nit picking!)
Keith7940236 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I just picked up a Prospect with '59's in the neck and bridge. I like the clean, rich tone of the neck. The bridge is clean and not harsh at all. Very nice definition., I play though a Minibrute II, so I can't comment on anything other than clean tones. My Eagle TDC is a totally different animal. The Schallers are original from 1992 and have a very classic Jazz tone..
