methenyfan53 Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Fresh on the heels of my newly acquired 525, is a 550 custom in wine red on the way. One of you told me I would soon become "hooked" and you were right. I couldn't pass up on this deal, since the others I looked at seemed to be hundreds more. In fact, this one was hundreds less than even my 525. I am anxious to find out how the two archtops compare. The 550 has a longer scale length, (25.5) and a little wider body, and slightly thicker rim than the 525. Also, it has the SD58's instead of the P-90's which are in my 525. Anyway, here is a photo I lifted from the auction. Cheers!
GASguy Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Great snag at the price you got it for! I had been admiring that big beautiful red H 550 for weeks! Congratulations!
H Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 That's really pretty - I'd like to try one of those someday.
High Flying Bird Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 A buddy has a 550. It is special. You should love that guitar.
Gitfiddler Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Yep, there is something very special about 550's. They do the big jazz thump as well as most full solid wood archtops. Plus you can play them in live venues without too much feedback issue. I miss mine. Play that big red lady in good health.

I had thought you changed your mind and kept it. Where did it end up?
Gitfiddler Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Tim, you ended up selling your 550? I had thought you changed your mind and kept it. Where did it end up? Yep, I went back and forth but in the end sold it to a local jazz player through a consignment shop. I had to let something go due to an unexpected GAS attack. 550's cover a lot of tonal ground. I had planned to drop a set of Phat Cats in it. Maybe next time.
RJLII Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 I miss my H-550. I just wish the neck had been thicker. I'm so petty........
Guest HRB853370 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Man, the cherry really looks nice on that one! It does, I have a thing for cherry too.
Guest HRB853370 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Wow...you have really bad GAS Ummm, that coming from Mr. Brent?
unikh550 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 That looks more like Transparent Red than Wine. Am having a Heritage worker,on his own time, strip the ACB finish off of my H-550, and refinish it in a deep Natural. Heritage wouldn't do it in the factory because of the removal and reinstallation of the Charlie Christian pickup. Is the perfect guitar for jazz.-Charley Bevell
methenyfan53 Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 Wow...you have really bad GAS If I have bad gas, can I blame this HOC? Everybody told me that once I started it would turn into an addiction. At any rate, I think I am set with owning two archtops. Having one with P90s and one with SD's should provide me plenty of tonal variation. Any recommendations on a good solid body?
