NoNameBand Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 That's sick. I've never seen that before. Beautiful once again MG.
FredZepp Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Nice one.... We just saw a nice recent example of this with Will's goldtop...
MartyGrass Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 It's true, but I had never seen the flame show through in person. Well, I still haven't, but now there are several examples in pictures. So why is that? Is the flame so healthy that it cannot be hidden or is the gold coat thinner? I gots to know.
Kuz Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 I don't know how that is possible. I can't see it in my two GT 150s. First time I saw those pics I thought it was artifacts from compression on the jpeg files. Kind of like this pic of mine.... (on the walls which don't have flames!!!) I don't understand how a opaque finish can show flames????
MartyGrass Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 That is beautiful Mark, what a nice guitar. It is. And it's Jay Wolfe's. With the TV Jones pups and the Bigsby, it's very Gretschy sounding.

Guest HRB853370 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 My GT has so much flaming under that gold that it is hot to the touch. Wonder why Brent didn't notice it while he had it?
zguitar71 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 In the right light I can see it on mine. I think it is a shame to paint a nice peice of fame maple! I have heard stories of people striping the Gibson GT's that came out in `68 so they could turn them into burst because the Maple under the gold paint was flamey. I have no evidence of this, just internet stories, ect. I also heard that some of those old G bran GT's were the left over bodies from the original 50's and early 60 Les Pauls. I wish I could see the Flame more in my GT, not quilte translucent but more see through than now, kinda' inbetween I guess. That would be kool.
DetroitBlues Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Someone before Will also had a GT 150 that you could see the flame on camera but not the naked eye.
Kuz Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Someone before Will also had a GT 150 that you could see the flame on camera but not the naked eye. Maybe the nitro finish is sinking into the top and that is what is showing up as flame?? I am going out on a limb and sticking to it, if you can't see it with the naked eye then it is an artifact. Our eyes have MORE resolution than a compressed jpeg. Or maybe I have a bunch of talent, but I can't hear it with my ears. If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it....... well you get my point.

It just takes the exact angle to catch it. Fortunately, my el cheapo camera caught the right angle!
Gitfiddler Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Hmmph! My goldtop 535 must be defective. I can't see anything. It doesn't matter though. Whenever I play it, the Seths start singing and I end up closing my eyes!! Some flame is so dominant that it will show through thin nitro. And you KNOW Mr. Wolfe gets really nice pieces. The one pictured above is killer!
barrymclark Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 That might be one of the coolest tops I\'ve ever seen.
Kuz Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Tomorrow, when I have a free moment, I am taking the Gold tops outside and I am going to search for Big Foot myself. AND if I find the UFO flames, I will be the first one to admit I was wrong about Nessie!!!!

Actually, I will even take photos of them while in my possession!

kbp810 Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Maybe when the paint is applied it's raising the grain a bit making the figure pop out just enough? Either way, I think my eyes are better than Slammers or DB's - you better send it to me for a second opinion

Kuz Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I put tin foil on my head so the United Nations helicopters flying outside my house couldn't read my mind while I was searching for the Yettie in my backyard. I had a free moment to determine if I could see any flame through my gold top 150s..... NOPE, Nothing.... But in while I was walking back to house avoiding the crop circles in my backyard, I stepped in a big pile of Sasquatch dung!!!!
