Nobody "needs" Vox. Having Vox is just another luxury!

Yup. My old gigging amp from the 80s, reborn. I have a real nostalgic connection to that old amp, and, in its present form, it is a great sounding amp.

True. I did have a Mesa Blue Angel for a while, which at least had el84's, but I had 6v6 amps I liked better and I didn't think it sounded very Vox-y, so I let it go. One of the very few things I have an eye out for is an AC-style amp. But hey, I did have a "bad cat" in one of the pics. Anyone had a chance to play the Carr Artimus? Maybe I'll get to do a student Beatles ensemble sometime down the line, and use that as an excuse to pick up a Vox-style amp.

 

Just got back from an all-day amp pilgrimage to John Nau's place --best amp guy I've ever found. Cap job and tubes for the Concert, and, I installed an EV in it while John moved on. Sounds like it should. He located and replaced leaking components causing major noise in the JTM30 --also sounds like a different amp. Two amps that I picked up cheap because I thought John Nau (Nau Engineering, Rochester, NY) could bring them back to life, and, he did, along with a couple of tweaks on a couple of other amps, and, did it all in an afternoon so I wouldn't have to make another trip back to pick things up.

I recognized it in the pic, after reading about them in Bill Moore's Ampeg book...which is a great read & history of Ampegs.

 

 

That is a good book! Bill's a friend of mine. Good player, and a good writer, who's been teaching English for nearly thirty years. Quirky guy who allegedly has a basement full of vintage stuff, but nobody's guessed the secret password to get down there.

sadly I sold my SVT but it was like having a nuclear bomb stored in your house, I never used it!!

Thanks. Yup, lights up on both the SB12 and the B15 Reissue (the old one, which is basically a B4b, with (even bigger transformers) transformers). On the B15, you got a chance to get custom engraving on the plate that lights up. Mine says

LB's B15. Sort of like an engraved TRC, I guess, but I get a kick out of it. For years, I thought that amp sucked, and then I found out that one of the tubes in the brand new set of Svets that I installed when I got the amp (NOS), was completely dead. With four working power tubes and properly biased, it has become a completely different amp. Again, not really the old B15 circuit, but the v4B is a classic tube bass amp. Not the monster of the SVT, but it has a sound.

I have an old V4B head sitting in a closet with a blown OT

 

one of these days I'll get it fixed... been waiting for a dead chassis or parts to get a cheap replacement

 

to this day, one of the most glorious tones I've ever gotten was a Les Paul straight into that thing, dimed, w/a marshall 4x12 ( greenbacks )

Here's part of my collection. I've been thinking about selling these, since they never see any use--but it's hard to decide which ones to let go, because they all sound so good!

Market is not strong for used amps, so play through them all once a month or so. Good for a player to keep his ears and fingers fresh by playing through different guitars and amps on a regular basis, good for the amps to run them periodically to keep the caps formed.

Well, in a distant fashion, it's based on a Marshall classic circuit. The clean channel is a dark/bright input low-gain channel with a master volume. When it's in overdrive mode, one of the knobs is a 3-way switch on the faceplate that reconfigures the cathode and signal dropping circuits of 2 triodes in the OD section to give 3 distinct "flavors" of distortion, kind of "70's, 80's, and 90's", if you will. The third channel is basically similar to the 2nd channel, but uses it's own master volume, as well as brightening up the overall signal and adding a bit more gain (.68uF cap across the cathode resistor of the stage right before the CF/tonestack) to put the lead guitar sound "out front." Perfect for a bar cover band. Instead of distortion boxes on my pedalboard (I don't have any these days), all I do is flip the knob for what's appropriate for the song. The cabs are 1x12, the top one (slanted front) has a WGS Green Beret, and the bottom one has a Celestion G12-H30. Both cabinets have a 3" opening across the back panel. They seem to cut through the mix very well.

Here's my small amp collection. Couldn't include the Carr Rambler cause it is over at the jam barn. Also included my matched set Heritage 150/535, my gold top, and my Gibson Lucille. The rug and wall both tend towards beige so the color doesn't come thru very well.

Line up in the above pic is, left to right, Red Plate Blues Machine on top of an extension cab w/15" eminence, Line 6 Jam on top of a Heritage Lobo, and the Two Rock stack.
