Guest HRB853370 Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 There was a 66 Fender Showman, amp and cab, excellent shape on both, for $1450 at MGR. What are the specs on that head? I believe the cab is 2x15. Wondering if that is a good price. MGR is usually a little on the high side.

Gitfiddler Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Will~ Check this site. If you contact them, I bet they can give you more info on your search as well as pricing. http://ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-blackface-showman/ http://ampwares.com/
tulk1 Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Pretty sure John Covach has one. Or one like it. I had a '74 Dual Showman 2x15 that just killed. One of two amps I wish I still had. For a vintage/good shape '66 Showman, I'd think they're in the ball park.
pressure Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Copy and paste is your friend, also it helps to have been there. The blackface and silverface Showman and Dual Showman are basically the same amp except that the Dual Showman has a different impedance output transformer since it was meant to hook up to a pair of cabinets instead of one (or two speakers in a single cabinet instead of one speaker). I think a Showman is 8 ohms and a Dual Showman is 4 ohms, but the circuits are the same. Once you get into a silverface there may be a couple of variations in the bias circuit that changed how it is adjusted, which could be converted to the older specs if you wanted to. There is also a Dual Showman Reverb once you get into the silverface amps and it is identical to a Twin Reverb of the same year: it's basically a Twin Reverb head.
rjsanders Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 the ampwares page pretty much sez it all. another good (& related, it seems) is the Fender Amp Field Guide couple notes <pun alert>: no mention of tone-ring speaker cabs. worth investigating - they're highly prized. also, i just measured my '64 head & it's 24"W x 9"D x 8"H, about 35 lbs.
barrymclark Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 does a showman have reverb? There was a Showman Reverb I believe. I don't recall the standard Showman having reverb though. Dick Dale was known for using these. Surf-tastic!
rjsanders Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 does a showman have reverb? not until '68. & then it was silverface, so less desireable (circuit changes, construction changes, etc.)
Gitfiddler Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 not until '68. & then it was silverface, so less desireable (circuit changes, construction changes, etc.) That's why Fender sold so many of their cool (but large) reverb units. (I hear that KBP810 also makes a mean reverb too!)

H Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 ... tone-ring speaker cabs. worth investigating - they're highly prized. +1 I know a guy in Wisconsin that builds cabs with these in. He describes it as 'surround sound for an amp'
yoslate Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Bet there's enough headroom in that thing to accomodate Manute Bol....
