ghumba Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 What is HOC thoughts on the 535 vs Prospect in terms of sound and form factor? I've always wanted a 535, played one, liked it, but am now intrigued by the Prospect. They kind of look a little goofy to me, but the smaller size is pretty appealing.
SouthpawGuy Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Goofy ? Goofy my a$$. As for the answer to the question, get both I feel better now.

The Prospect is an interesting instrument. It doesn't have the exact same curve lines as the traditional 535, but it still looks good. It also has a floating center block which means its in between the tone of a thinline hollow body (530) and a semi-hollow body (535). But I think it would have a unique tone depending on what you're using it for. For me, that would be blues rock, and as long as the center block helps reduced feedback at high volume/gain, it should be a great instrument if you choose it.
ghumba Posted June 21, 2012 Author Posted June 21, 2012 Goofy ? Goofy my a$$. As for the answer to the question, get both I feel better now. Damn, that thing definitely doesn't look goofy. What's the name of the color of your Prospect? ALSB? I guess I mean to say, I'm so used to the 335/535 shape, it was just different enough to take some time to warm up to. I think I'm there now though, haha. Do you notice a feedback difference between the two?
Guest HRB853370 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Yeah, they sure do look goofy, almost as though they carved the body wrong at the factory! Sorry if this offends all you Prospect owners, no offense intended!! Like I have said before, "real men (and ladies)" play a 535! heh heh heh!

I did a very rough feedback test when I received mine. I compared the Prospect, 535 and 575 by sitting directly in front of the AC30 and turning it up until they started to feedback. The 535 was the most resistant, surprise surprise, and the 575 howled wonderfully. The Prospect was much nearer to the 535 in terms of feedback resistance, it does have unpotted Seth Lovers though while the other two have wax potted '59s.

The other thing that bothers me is why they call it a Prospect. KInd of a silly name for a guitar dontcha think? Why couldn't they have just called it an H-540 or something that kind of follows their traditional scheme. Or maybe the Mickey Mouse because of those ears that stand out? More evidence that this guitar model is not from the planet earth!

I don't think you saw one in person but by both luck and chance this photo came out good!
Guest HRB853370 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Nice shot! Didn't know you had such nice gitfiddles. Yeah, I see now, like the Parsons St. model that Davesnothere has! Bingo!
DetroitBlues Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 I'd like to try one out one of these days. They are rare indeed, most of the time they are custom ordered I think...
kidsmoke Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 I own a 535, and have played punkkitty's Prospect. if the right Prospect came along (neck geometry primary, finish secondary), I'd trade for it. from a comfort standpoint, it's preferable, and the tone variations are minimal and alterable. Like choosing between a Porsche and a Ferrari. no Wrong answers. Kenny's Prospect is, in my opinion, the ultimate Heritage Semi. (previously stolen/shared with permission )

ghumba Posted June 21, 2012 Author Posted June 21, 2012 Yes, and I think he wants to sell it too! Definitely a beautiful guitar!
kidsmoke Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Yes, and I think he wants to sell it too! you're kidding, right? I'm sure you're kidding. PLEASE tell me you're kidding. He spec'd out this beauty.

Well so has Brent before and he has sold such inventory. I bet he would! I am sure there is something out there he really has GAS for! As far as me, my GAS is OVER!
big bob Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Looking funny, what? Am I the only one who noticed both the guitars in question are back assward.
tulk1 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 you're kidding, right? I'm sure you're kidding. PLEASE tell me you're kidding. He spec'd out this beauty. Rest easy. This Prospect is not going anywhere. Ever. It's my fav Heritage of all time. It goes in the "never sell" set along with the '74LPC, the '94 PRS CE24, the H40 Mandolin and the PSP White 535 Custom. Now, the Leon and the Millie DC NFH ... those could be negotiated out of my hands. But not the Prospect.

pushover Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 I love the sound and versatility of the 535 but I do find the body size uncomfortable for me to hold (mainly sitting down). I'd prolly be thinking about a prospect also, but with the 157 and milli-DC as alternatives, I clearly have more than I need.
