je00143 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I had the chance to hear three guitarists, with three different instruments, with three different amps, all sounding great. Mimi Fox, Jane Getter and Leni Stern performed as The Guitar Goddesses in an open-air concert in Palo Alto last night. Mimi used her 575 direct (no pedals in the chain) into a Fender Delux Reverb. Jane used a Tele with an MXR DynaComp and a Boss digital delay into a TomKatt amp, and Leni used a Strat (very, very well worn!) a bunch of pedals into a Corr 12. All three had different tones, but were very clean and quite loud. They had a PA but didn't need it don't get me wrong there were no bleeding ears that I saw, but they were able to cover a pretty good-size venue on their own. Fun night!!
Guest HRB853370 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Her website shows that she favors a Golden Eagle and the 575 custom. Never heard of her but need to check it out!
MartyGrass Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Mimi is worth checking out. She is an excellent bebop player and teacher. I've seen her with a Sweet 16 and an Eagle Classic, too. That must have been one helluva show.
Keith7940236 Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I downloaded her album, Perpetually Hip the other day. She really can play. It seems that I read that her mentor was Joe Pass. I found a really interesting article talking about how she was teaching guitar at 12. Pretty impressive!
Genericmusic Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 My son son studied with Mimi Fox at UC Berkeley. Nice person and very good teacher according to him. When my son comes to visit I have to pry my Heritage from his hands when he comes for a visit. Last night he insinuated that he would like his inheritance early.
t0aj15 Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I never realized before that Mimi Fox is signed to Steve Vai's label Favored Nations. Talk about dedication even her ear-rings are tiny gold guitars.
Gitfiddler Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Mimi mouths each and every note as she plays. I wish she'd drop by the HOC some time. What a master jazz player!!
tsp17 Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Mimi is one of my current favorites on the scene. She is super nice too.
Guest HRB853370 Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Mimi mouths each and every note as she plays. I wish she'd drop by the HOC some time. What a master jazz player!! Be a long ride from California. But we are still waiting for you to drop by too Tim.
schundog Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I'd gladly pick up Tim and Mimi at Chicago Midway airport enroute to Kalamazoo! I am NOT kidding, Tim!
fxdx99 Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 You were close - looks like a fun show to be at. Wasn't familiar with either Stern or Getter. Watched some clips - Stern in the 90 show is very 'Methenyish' - like that. Bet they had fun playing off each other.
zydecosoultrain Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Mimi's "She's the woman" is an all time favourite of mine. Her teaching material is great, and her DVDs are challenging in a really good way. I use "Arpeggio Studies on Jazz Standards" a lot at the moment and the DVDs "Flying Solo" and "Jazz Anatomy" are really something to aspire to.
the jayce Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Mimi mouths each and every note as she plays. I wish she'd drop by the HOC some time. What a master jazz player!! You got that right! Her name pops up from time to time here on the hoc, and while an awsome guitarist she's like watching a trainwreck unfold before your eyes. She has to be listened too, not watched. When she gets that mouth of hers a moving it is like watching a syfy creature trying to eat it's way out of an egg shell. "Sorry mimi" But she has got to find a better way to keep in time besides the facial distortions and hidious mouth movments. I know this is bad but i'd like to grab a corn on the cob and place it at her mouth when she starts playing and step back and watch the show! I bet that cob wouldnt last but about 3 milli seconds!
Gitfiddler Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I'd gladly pick up Tim and Mimi at Chicago Midway airport enroute to Kalamazoo! I am NOT kidding, Tim! Thanks guys!! One of these years I'm going to make it. I get depressed every time I see PSP stuff. Just can't convince my boss to let up just a little. "Thank you God for employment!" is repeated over and over again! It helps.
Gitfiddler Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Here's another guitar master who 'lip syncs' as he plays. (Many great players do this) Lee Ritenour playing with another unknown dude. Both using vintage Kalamazoo gitfiddles.
DetroitBlues Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Is it just me, or did anyone else expect to see some bikini clad Playboy bunny types playing guitar when opening this thread. So funny that when we read Guitar God's, we think of some hardcore guitar player with chops to spare, but when we see Goddess, we think about beauty, not ability?
je00143 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, etc., etc. These are three great ladies, fun to talk with, easy to approach, have their act together, so to speak. And I, for one, am nothing to look at, so………but I can play a little, by God, yes I can. As Harry Chapin once said, Music was his life, it was not his livelihood, it made him feel so happy and it made him feel so good. He played from his heart and he played from his soul. He did not know how well he played, it just made him whole. (adapted from Mister Tanner, 1974)
je00143 Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 This just in! http://truefire.tv/page.html?p=000001XDDtjA5cJ6i6FHRiNsagJIDE8GehFuc=
