smokedtires Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Never knew about the Heritage/ Gretsch relationship! Looks like a beautiful axe, enjoy!
MartyGrass Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I have found the DeArmond to create a pretty pure single coil electric sound. I had one on an old non-cutaway L5. Recently I got some insight about why my DeArmond didn't capture the nuances of my archtop. Jason Lollar explained that the pickup captures more of the acoustic qualities when it is farther from the strings and more of the pickup qualities when close to the strings.
hotfordcoupe Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 Thanks MG for that info. I didn't know that about the DeArmonds. I'll try to install one of my thinner ones and see what kind of effect I get.
TalismanRich Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Hey HotFordCoupe. When and where is your next gig? I might want to come out and listen, or heckle, or whatever. I need to start getting out to hear some live music. I haven't really heard any local jazz since I was at the Jazz Factory some years back.
hotfordcoupe Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 My next gig, actually my only steady gig is at the Golden Health (Hillcreek) nursing home on Breckinridge Lane in Louisville. I play twice a week in the dining room for the residents on Monday and Friday about 5PM. I'll be there tomorrow. It's an all volunteer gig for no pay. If they don't like the music, I tell them to turn down their hearing aids. If they don't have hearing aids, I tell them to cut my salary.
TalismanRich Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Bravo, HFC for taking the time to entertain the residents there. I have a friend in Virginia who does a similar thing. He's got a drum machine and some backing tracks, takes his acoustic guitar and little PA system and plays at the nursing home several times a month.
hotfordcoupe Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 I used to use my drum machine also but it got to be a pain in the neck because I couldn't hear the beat too well and I kept on going off. If I made it louder, it interfered with the music so I work without it. Not all of the folks in the facility are old since it became more of a physical rehab center but you'll be surprised how many of them love the old standards. When they request tunes they request some of the really good ones.
bolero Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 wow, that is fascinating, and a great guitar to boot!! does anyone know what other Gretsches Heritage ghost built? I wonder if they did any of the Billy Bo's?
hotfordcoupe Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 Thanks bolero. According to one source, this is the only model that was supposed to be ghost built. I e-mailed Heritage the other day about production numbers but they haven't gotten back to me yet on that. When I get that info, I'll post it.
Trouble Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 The decal with the 4 signatures on it is way cool. I did some research and Heritage has ghostbuilt for several companies, there is some info on the old Ed Roman site.

I wonder if they did any of the Billy Bo's? I'm pretty sure they had nothing to do with the Billy Bo guitars. As far as Billy Gibbons personal guitars Gresch doesn't either, all are ghostbuilt, by Bolan I believe. Not trying to hi jack the thread but here is some info on Bolan guitars http://www.bolinguitars.com/ It's amazing how many players use guitars that look like a current production guitar, but are actually custom made by very high end builders.

I got an e-mail from Heritage today. They asked me to call them directly. I believe this is where I'll get my answers.
hotfordcoupe Posted August 15, 2012 Author Posted August 15, 2012 Well, I called Heritage today and I got confirmation that Heritage did make less than 50 of this one model. The guitars were supposed to say "built by the Heritage Guitar Company" so it wasn't meant to be a secret. They told Gretsch up front that there was no question that the guitars would be made according to Heritage standards of quality. Gretsch had no problem with that. I also found out that these Synchromatics were tap tuned.
