JackBaruth Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Back in February I traded a new Martin D-18P for a Nineties H-157 in black w/gold trim. On a whim., I asked Pete Moreno to strip the top. It took him a little bit of time to do it, but thanks to Brent I just got a few photos of what was underneath: As you eagle-eyed Heritage fanciers will no doubt see, this is actually bookmatched, but the seam doesn't line up down the center of the guitar. I'm currently considering what finish to have put on it. All suggestions accepted Thinking about an Iguanaburst similar to this Sweetwater in-stock LPC: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LPCSTDIB?utm_source=none&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=none&gclid=CKDrmbHRxLECFQW0nQoduEQAVg
DetroitBlues Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Holy Crap! I can't believe they cover all that up! Just imagine what is underneath that white 140! I suggest a transparent finish.. But the question is which one.. .You have a lot of finishes already... I would almost think a dark Amber or Wine Red, besides you already have a green 150 series...
skydog52 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I'm liking your choice on that color! Lime burst. Maybe a new Heritage color.
SouthpawGuy Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Reverse burst ? Dark in the centre and light around the edges ?
MartyGrass Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 What a shame they didn't have enough maple on the left side! That's a beautiful top. Anything as a finish should work, including antique natural. Don't go opaque.
Millennium Maestro Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Thats am awesome top, I have a late 90s 157 BB I sold to Nate which you could tell had that kind of heavy flame under the finish. Congrats
kidsmoke Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I think just the name Iguanaburst is pretty damn cool. Beautiful top.
Genericmusic Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I'd leave it al naturale, naked as a jaybirds leg. Something that pretty one would want to flaunt regardless of the center line.
H Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Lemon Drop. But first a bit of black lacquer to really pull the figure out. Sand it back then apply the lemon drop. Should end up like tiger stripes
Kuz Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I don't know if it is an optical illusion or not, but if the seam is not centered I would DEFINITELY go an opaque color. The off center seam would bug the heck out of me and with a translucent finish you would have a hard time selling it. My guess it that top started it's life as a translucent finish guitar but something happened to misaline the seam. Heritage then decided to cover it up with a opaque color. IF the seam is centered then I like your translucent ideas!!!! Just my .02
mars_hall Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Looks nice. Go for a gradient, parallel to the line. Black at the top (in playing position) through light light charcoal translucent at the knobs. Depending on the rate of change the line will be masked.
kbp810 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Wow, that was some great looking wood hiding under all that paint I sort of agree with Kuz; I'd hate to hide that flame, but that off center seam would bug the heck out of me! ...though maybe with that reverse burst idea it wouldn't be noticable under the darker color?
PunkKitty Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 The top is nice. I like the idea of the Iguanaburst.
Steiner Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Drop a seam of bubinga or purpleheart, or cherry, or cocobola, or... down the center of the face to cover the current maple seam and straddle the center-line. spice to taste.

JackBaruth Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 What Steiner's suggesting basically amounts to creating a "Spotlight Special", as seen here: It's a hell of an idea. In fact, it's an idea I've already had: I asked Ren about doing one last year but there wasn't much enthusiasm for it at the factory. Who's capable of doing that? Anybody on this board have a recommendation?
Genericmusic Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 if you don't mind waiting Pete Moreno is one of the best finish men in the mid-west (IMHO). Leave it there and let him finish it.
JackBaruth Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 if you don't mind waiting Pete Moreno is one of the best finish men in the mid-west (IMHO). Leave it there and let him finish it. Well, I've waited half a year already so I might as well go all the way. Since I already have a gorgeous H-157 Ultra Natural I think I will definitely put some color in this one. I'm going to show Pete a picture of the Iguanaburst finish. If he can't make that happen I will probably do lemon drop. Not too worried about selling it. I am already wayyy too deep into this guitar cash-and-trade wise, Probably do a set of Sheptone Heartbreakers and the RS Jimmy Page wiring kit.
DetroitBlues Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Heck, I'd just take that 157 off your hands as is for the price of that GT and just coat in in Tung Oil...
bolero Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 How about a trans purple? Otherwise I'd probably go for a dark burst sort of thing....or maybe a faded finish a la peter green?
JackBaruth Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 How about a trans purple? Otherwise I'd probably go for a dark burst sort of thing....or maybe a faded finish a la peter green? I already have a Peter Green R9: http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-Custom/Collectors-Choice-1-1959-Les-Paul-Standard.aspx
bolero Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 wow Peter Green is *somewhat* conspicuous by his absence in that advert about as conspicuous as King Kong they legally cannot mention Peter Green anywhere in promo material for that guitar?
JackBaruth Posted August 2, 2012 Author Posted August 2, 2012 wow Peter Green is *somewhat* conspicuous by his absence in that advert they legally cannot mention Peter Green anywhere in promo material for that guitar? The guitar was part of a really odd chain of custody. Peter Green gave it to Gary Moore. Gary has had some debts and personal issues which he chose to resolve by selling it to a fellow whom he believed to be the "end user". Supposedly the sale price was well south of a million dollars. The buyer wasn't the end user; he was a dealer who was acting on behalf of Melvyn Franks, a British collector. Franks reportedly paid $2.2 million as the final purchase price. He also permitted the dealer to drag the guitar around to shows for the better part of a year and show it off to the general public. Gary wasn't happy about any of this, obviously. Gibson took custody of the guitar for a while. The idea was to do a Peter Green signature model similar to the Mike Bloomfield model. Peter didn't want to get involved and supposedly there was an issue with his right to use his name on an endorsed product due to some aspect of British law regarding wards of the state and whatnot. Gibson then went to Gary but he wasn't in the mood to cooperate. By the time he came around they'd already announced it as the "Melvyn Franks" guitar, so the Gary Moore signature went on the Murphy Aged model. The whole thing was quite convoluted but since 95% of the people who would want to drop $7K or so on a Gibson R9 know who the guitar is really attached to, it worked out. R9 prices rose sharply last year so a plain R9 now costs as much as the "Collectors Choice" model.
smaj Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 I 'd go with Heritage's own rose natural, great color.
