Trouble Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 I've been noticing a lot of focus on the weight of guitars lately, in non chambered 150's what is the average weight? Mine weigh's 10.5lbs, I'm guessing that is a little on the heavy side but I absolutely love it. Lately I have noticed my neck hurting the next day after a four hour gig though.
koula901 Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 my chambered 150 is 7.5 lbs. oops, you said non-chambered. sorry.
MartyGrass Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 My guess is the average is 9.5 lbs with a wide range.
AP515 Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Mine is 10.2Lbs. Love the tone but not so much the weight.

MartyGrass Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 H157 weights? They also all over the place. 9.3, 9.5, 10.0 and 12.7 lbs. on my scale.
Buckyrock Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 with my last custom build (2012) H-157 (yeah, I know the question was for a h-150), I specified as light as possible while still being solid. It weighs 8.5 lbs.
DetroitBlues Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I think with the right strap and string balance, weight shouldn't matter, I play 45 to 60 minute sets. Weight doesn't bother me that much.
Kuz Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 with my last custom build (2012) H-157 (yeah, I know the question was for a h-150), I specified as light as possible while still being solid. It weighs 8.5 lbs. This is the key for a custom build. I requested between 8.5-9.5lbs for my two custom ordered 150s. One came in at 9.5lbs and the other at 9lbs. Any lighter 8.5lbs and ( in my opinion ) they start sounding like a Tele. But you can custom order a weight limit.
Gitfiddler Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 150 Ultra = 9.4 lbs 157 Natural = 9.2 lbs 157 Triple HRW = 9 lbs
NewGuy Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 '98 (14+ year old wood ) H-150 born at 9.15 lbs , re~born at 9.2
Trouble Posted September 15, 2012 Author Posted September 15, 2012 Thanks all, it's kind of interesting how much the weight fluctuates from guitar to guitar. If the weight has anything to do with why my guitar is what it is, I wouldn't change a thing. For you guys that have several to compare can you nail down any differences in the way heavier guitars sound or feel compared to lighter guitars? Oh and 157's are fine, same thing just dressed a little better.
chico Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I wonder if X-rays or something could image the guitars at varying weights to try and visually detect any appreciable difference in density of the bodies
PunkKitty Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 '85 H170 - 9.8 pounds '98 H140 - 8.2 pounds '00 Prospect - 6.8 pounds (it's well balanced too)

Lighter and my experiences have been a guitar that can really sing but doesn't have the lows and low-mid grunt & growl you want from a LP style guitar. Over 10 lbs and my experiences have been that the guitar can get all little low end dominant to the point the guitar will be wooly & muddy unless played at higher volumes. That is my weight for tone generalizations for a LP style guitar, bu there are always exceptions.
TalismanRich Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I checked my 157 some time back, and it was 9.5 lbs. My 140 is a shade over 8 lbs. It's hard to give a direct comparison of the two since the pickups are different. The original Schallers were very dark sounding in the 140 compared to the Schallers in the 157. One would think based on weight it would be the opposite. I think it has more to do with the 1986 era pickups vs 2003 pickups. My 535 sounded closer to the 157 and its of similar vintage (2005). I put SD Alnico 2 Pros into the 140 and it helped a lot! You can tell they are in the same "family" of LP sound, no way they will be confused with a strat or tele. But, they are of different flavors of LP sound.
JeffB Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 All my guitars except one are on the heavier side for the type. I dont know if there is any difference in sound between a light and heavy guitar of the same type. I just keep picking heavy guitars. Its annoying.

Kuz Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I won't believe you unless you have your buddy Terry McInturff validate this!! (ha ha) Terry's guitar range from 8.25-9.5LBs. Everything he does is intentional, no guitars come out as mistakenly too heavy or too light. SO this must be the ideal weight in his opinion.
