JohnCovach Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Here's a picture of the goldtop I bought from Brent a couple of weeks ago--the one with the belly cut and the ebony board. You'll recall that it had Kent Armstrong pups in it then. I have now put humbucker-mount TV Jones Filter'trons in it. This is really a nice variation on the classic LP sound. The TV's don't sound quite like the ones in my Gretsches, which are both semi-hollow. They're brighter than humbuckers but not as bright as P-90s or Fender single coils. I also added the G-style pickguard and switch washer.
FredZepp Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Shazam ! ... that's a goldtop with a difference. And your description of the pickups sounds just right... and they look cool.
DetroitBlues Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Never heard how those pickups sound, but love the appointments you've added to that GT. awesome, congrats!
kidsmoke Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Sweet....even the contrast stitching on the strap works into it...ties into the TVJ's somehow. Very cool. I have to agree on the Gibby PG issues....it really does look "right".
golferwave Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 I have an H-150 with the TV Jones pickups as well and can attest to the unique sound in a solid body. Jay Wolfe had one from the factory and said it would be an option in any guitar. He sold that one and I haven't seen any since.
DavesNotHere Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 That exudes class. Black and Gold, sweet. If it sounds just half as good as it looks it will be killer.
Guest HRB853370 Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Those are some MONSTER pole pieces on those pups!!! Imagine a TV yellow guitar with TV Jones pups!!
bolero Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 wow that looks killer!! you have great taste! and good idea with the tv jones'
JohnCovach Posted September 22, 2012 Author Posted September 22, 2012 I really like the traditional mount on those pickups. I have an H-150 with the TV Jones pickups as well and can attest to the unique sound in a solid body. Jay Wolfe had one from the factory and said it would be an option in any guitar. He sold that one and I haven't seen any since.
HANGAR18 Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Two things I never heard of until this thread. 1. An H150 with an Ebony fretboard. 2. TV Jones pickups. Learning new stuff every day.
jamison162 Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 I've been thinking of trying out TV Jones for several years now, to see if they'll nail that Malcolm/ACDC tone. Anybody got clips?
mtpatty Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Two things I never heard of until this thread. 1. An H150 with an Ebony fretboard. 2. TV Jones pickups. Learning new stuff every day. My H150 CM (1999) has an ebony board!
JohnCovach Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 I like the ebony board on the 157 but can't handle the binding on the back, which digs into my ribs. Having the ebony board on a 150 and the belly cut makes for the right combination.
NoNameBand Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Looks great, how do you like the sound of the TV Jones in a Les Paul?
DetroitBlues Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Two things I never heard of until this thread.1. An H150 with an Ebony fretboard. 2. TV Jones pickups. Learning new stuff every day. My first 140 has an Ebony fretboard...
koula901 Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Really nice, John! I was just in your home town today. Have a friend in Rochester. Saw that lovely carousel at Ontario Lake.
