je00143 Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I saw the photos in a recent topic about a Super Eagle with a jack plate on the lower bout instead of using the jack in the bridge. The photos showed what looked like a very professional installation. Is that a factory-only sort of job or could a good - emphasis on good - luthier do it? And if I did it, what would be the effect on the acoustic sound of the instrument? Or should I stick to the old phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?" Gil
PunkKitty Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I would leave it alone if everything works okay.
Steiner Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I've had mine moved to the bottom of the lower bout. My luthier glues an additional piece of wood to the inside of the guitar, drills and fits the jack. I never heard any change in acoustics.
Kuz Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Get a right angle input cord and no need to change it. I have both, the Golden Eagle with a input at the tail piece, and my Custom 575 is on the rim. A right angle input cord like them both.
je00143 Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 I have the right-angle plug, thanks to Steiner. What I am aiming for is a strap lock - and as far as I can tell, there isn't a way to use one with the jack coming out of the strap holder. Or am I missing something? (Quite possible)
MartyGrass Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I have something useful to consider. I have this end pin strap lock designed for electric archtops. It works fine. http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/SK1.htm Some people screw a strap button into one of the holes in the tailpiece plate. My criticism is that this looks goofy. But every solution will look odd.
Steiner Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 +1 My GE has the strap lock connected to the tailpiece's upper screw. Looks fine to me when I practice. Your add on solution is high priority to elderly, MG. The sku # is 1.

Joe Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I made a strap lock for my 555. Just an egg shaped piece of leather with 2 slots to fit on the strap, like a carpenters belt attachment, and 2 hole that the cord fit through. Works well and doesn't scratch the guitar. I hope I didn't miss the point of the thread.

My only problem with the homemade strap lock are that they are usually very difficult to take on and off. All my guitars reside in their case when not used so I like the quick release function of the Schaller strap locks.
