bluesgolfer Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Thinking of ordering a brand new 140 or 150. I do like neck binding. Give me your thoughts. COLOR: Wine burst or tobacco burst? Or something else? PICKUPS: Seths or 59's, or a combination? Or something else? INLAYS or no inlays? I like the looks of inlays but, any difference in tone or sustain? WEIGHT: standard or lightweight? Any difference in tone or sustain? Also, are 500 pots standard on a Heritage Les Paul type? Any idea about turnaround time? Any idea on who best to order from? Who gives the best price and service on returns if needed. Is there anybody I should avoid? As far as setup, I can have that done locally and expertly for around $65 and maybe less. So, I don't want to pay a dealer several hundred more just because they perform a good setup when I can have that done for a few bucks anyway.
eljay Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 heck, if ya like wineburst and seth lovers, look at the 150 slammer posted for sale. it's beyond gorgeous. save some $.
TalismanRich Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I'm not a big fan of Tobacco Burst, but the Vintage Wine Bursts look really nice. I like inlays and bound headstocks. I've never found the inlay to make a difference in the sound or sustain. If I was to order a 150 today, I would go with the LW. Its not necessary with the 140. I like the feel of the 140. The thinner body feels better to me. Pickups are a personal thing. I have Seths, Schallers and AlnicoPro IIs. It really depends on if you want a full, heavy sound, a bright articulate sound, or somewhere in the middle. After listening to the TVJones vs 59s thread, I thought the TV Jones were very good sounding. I liked their balance and snap. You could also look at P90s of some type. Lots of choices there. As for dealers, I've got a dealer locally, so I worked through him when I ordered mine. If you are going mail order, Jay Wolfe generally gets high marks in making sure you get what you want.
