bluesgolfer Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Will probably special order a 140, 150, or 157. Will probably get an ebony board even if I get a 140 if I can be sure it won't be too bright in tone. I think I have my color choices down to wineburst or tobacco burst. So, wineburst or tobacco burst? Or if you feel strongly for another color, say so. Thanks in advance.
Millennium Maestro Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 tobacco burst shows the wood better, both are sweet colors
hotfordcoupe Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've always liked both but I think that the tobacco sunburst stnds out more. To me, it looks more classic for lack of a better word. I also think the red sunbursts have been done to the limit. I'd like to see something else.
DetroitBlues Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 As much as I love KBP custom 157 order, my vote is for tobacco burst. But from when I did a price check, the cost between a 140 and a 150 is very little...
tbonesullivan Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 depends entirely on you. Personally, I'm a fan of sunset burst/tri burst. I think the red adds a better transition between the yellow and black.
Blunote Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've got a OSB (tobacco burst) and chestnut burst. The wineburst seems to be darker like the OSB, and redder like chestnut burst. I really like what I have, but If I were ordering another guitar, I'm pretty sure it would be wine burst.
pressure Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 My vote is for Tobacco burst, that is if it winds up looking just like Chestnut burst.

tulk1 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I'm an OSB fan, myself. Just looks SO classy with a well figured top.
Blunote Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Here's Brians wine burst Here's my chestnut burst and OSB hanging SXS: Here's another gratuitous shot of the OSB: And one more self-serving picture of the chestnut burst color that's been recommended here:
heritagefan7 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Yep, I'm w/ Tbone---SSB for me---I've always loved the OSB 157 though...wow!

High Flying Bird Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Here's the Guit's custom Sunset Burst.
Guest HRB853370 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 In all honesty, why do you need "help" in picking out a finish? Really now, this should be something that is your personal choice, not opinionated by others. I'd be happy to help you pick out a car when your ready to buy a new one!!!

We all have our favorites. I dig SunsetBurst, VintageBurst, ChestnutBurst, GoldenAmber, AntiqueNatural, VintageWineBurst, etc., etc.,...you get the point. I love em all!! Like Slammer said, it really is a personal decision, one that you'll live with. Enjoy the hunt!
bluesgolfer Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 Thanks for the offer to help me pick out a new car Slammer. My lease is up in two years, however. Although I realize that color is generally a matter of personal preference and indeed I have narrowed my choices down to tobacco and wineburst based upon what I like and based upon what I already have, the thread I started isn't as rediculous as it may appear on its face. It's really about a combination of personal preference and resale value. Just as you are selling a 150, i may be selling my future guitar at a future date as well. Consequently, I would like to order a color that is a favorite amongst possible future purchasers out there so that the guitar will be easier to sell if I should ever decide to sell it. Hence, higher resale value. Incidentally, I was ready to pull the trigger on yours but then started entertaining thoughts of an ebony neck with block inlays. I am currently trying to obtain a quote from a dealer on a special order 150 with ebony and block inlays vs a 157 without the gold hardware. If I can find something in that regard used, I'd certainly take a serious look but I need somthing made in recent years to avoid a thinner neck and I assume guitars as described are very scarce.
Blunote Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Since you're local to me....I may someday be that buyer. In that case, please make it an H157 (I like the binding, wood pickguard, and especially the ebony fretboard. I'd also prefer split block inlays, a 3 piece neck, and nickel hardware. I've also been told Throbak pickups are stuffed with mojo. Have them sprinkle the whole thing with the pixie dust I'm told they keep in a special locker there in Kalamazoo. Got that? Oh, and as I said before...I'll be more tempted to buy a really flamey vintage wineburst.

Really flamey wineburst sounds great and I have to say that if nothing else mattered, that would get the nod over tobacco for me. But, my professional buddy told me tobacco is actually more popular Then again, Brian's wineburst above is very tough to argue with and it may be the better color in a 157 so long as it doesn't hide the wood grain. More importantly, however, tell me more about that pixie dust. I may head to K'zoo.

While that was the guitar I'd order if were to place a special order, all kidding aside, my point is that you should buy the guitar YOU want...just they way YOU want it. If you're going to the expense of purchasing a custom ordered instrument, the hit you may take on resale because it doesn't have the most sought after color or hardware is negligible by comparison. I don't know if you're this way or not, but I'm sometimes amused by people who buy fine guitars (and other things), then refuse to use them for fear of hurting their resale value. It's like they've reduced their role as owner of the thing to caretaker in possession.

From the looks of the responses to this thread, looks like you're absolutely right with regard to tobacco or wineburst as they both seem to be very popular colors but I didn't know that before this thread. A local dealer who didn't have wineburst told me it wasn't a popular color because he stated winebust hid the woodgrain. I'f I can't find a local dealer with both to view, I'll pay K'zoo a visit to try to determine exactly what I want. Thanks for you input.

You are correct that sometimes ordering a custom guitar will hamper its resale value because you would have to find a buyer that wants everything that was in your tastes. This happened to Brently when he ordered his custom DC 137 in VWB. Because the neck was thinner, it didn't appeal to everybody. It sounds as though you pretty much know what you want, which is good! I appreciate your interest in the VWB 150, but I know that there are a few other appointments you desired on it, and mine is pretty much a stock order. Smurph grabbed it and I am happy it is going to a very special HOC member. Good luck on narrowing it down, it will be well worth it in the long run and keep us apprised!
