MartyGrass Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 The pickups are great. I'm just getting acquainted though. They weigh almost nothing and cost about $100 or less each new. Yes, they look strange, but only for a short while. You get used to them. I have guitars with P90s, EMGs, writing on the covers, and that float. They all look odd at first. Then they don't. Appearance is not an issue to me. The sound they produce is distinct. There is great clarity- no mud at all. The mids are fuller than standard wound P90s. And there is no hum at all. They don't have the muffled warmth of the PAF or the bright chiminess of the Fender single coil. But there is some warmth and no ice pick highs. They sound just like this video.
Genericmusic Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Very cool! Do these come in a floating PUP style?
DetroitBlues Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 They have a nice tone. I looked them up and there are several varieties. But they only show this video... I wanted to hear the P-90 or the rock tones...
Kuz Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I think they look great as well. Are they all blue in the center? I would think making the blue part black or silver would make them match more guitars.
MartyGrass Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 I think they look great as well. Are they all blue in the center? I would think making the blue part black or silver would make them match more guitars. They are black. My photo skills don't do them justice.
Kuz Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 They are black. My photo skills don't do them justice. Oh, OK that makes more sense then.
GuitArtMan Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 They are black. My photo skills don't do them justice. Don't they offer several different color options?
jazzrat Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Nice...I did not think I'd like that "modern" look in an archtop but now that I see it, the aesthetics of the pickups kind of look like a logical extension of the inlays on the fretboard.. Pretty cool actually.
MartyGrass Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 They do have a cool sound, too. I'm not ready to get rid of all my typical humbuckers yet, but they are worth serious consideration when looking for a new tone.
H Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Are the polepieces aligned to a particular side of the pickups? If so, how do you tell?
PunkKitty Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Are the polepieces aligned to a particular side of the pickups? If so, how do you tell? There are no pole pieces. It's more of a bar structure.
H Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 There are no pole pieces. It's more of a bar structure. Ah! How do you know which way round to mount them? Is there an alignment indication somewhere on the pickup?
MartyGrass Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 The 4 wires come out of a side. I put that side toward the controls. I doubt it matters though. The bridge and the neck pickups are the same. You can adjust the pup heights for output balance. They are simple to use.
PunkKitty Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 I decided to install Alumitones in my H170. The weight dropped from 9.4 pounds to 9.0 pounds. They sound fantastic. Nice and clean but they can drive an amp to be dirty as needed. As per the instructions I wired them with 250k pots and .022 caps. I'll have to play with them some more. But I'm impressed.
MartyGrass Posted October 18, 2012 Author Posted October 18, 2012 PK, I'm very glad to hear this. They are relatively cheap and dead quiet. I used 500K pots, which Lace himself recommended for an arch top. I predict you will grow to like them even more.
